    Tuesday, February 4: "Choosing International Arbitration or National Court Litigation: How is the Decision-Making Different?"

    The panel compared judicial vs. arbitral decision-making and provide background for you to choose the best course of action for the resolution of your dispute and/or how to persuade given different approaches – in essence, a “bird's-eye view” in the “kitchen” of decision-making. Participants and their topics included the Hon. Ursula Ungaro on discussing judicial and arbitral decision-making, Professor Albert Jan van den Berg on arbitral decision-making, Gail A. Lione on the “user's perspective,” and Carolyn Lamm on the advocate's/ arbitrator’s perspective.

    Thursday, September 21: White & Case International Arbitration Lecture on “ICSID Arbitration: Past, Present and Future” with Meg Kinnear

    The University of Miami School of Law hosted the 2023 White & Case International Arbitration Lecture on September 21, 2023, featuring Meg Kinnear, Secretary-General of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Her lecture, titled “ICSID Arbitration: Past, Present and Future,” explored the evolution of investment arbitration under ICSID, highlighting its historical development, current challenges, and future directions in investor–state dispute settlement. The event reflected Miami Law’s ongoing commitment to advancing global dialogue in international arbitration. Learn more.

    George BermannMiami Law’s 2022 White & Case International Arbitration Lecture featured George A. Bermann (Professor, Columbia Law School) on “International Arbitration and EU Law: Still on a Collision Course?" Although international arbitration and the European Union – two of the world's most robust international law regimes – have coexisted peacefully for decades, hostility between them has erupted, to the point that each of the two regimes regards the other as the prime threat to its authority. The contestation has been waged on several fronts and, while the termination of intra-EU bilateral investment agreements will mitigate them, mutual antagonism persists.     David W. RivkinMiami Law’s 2021 White & Case International Arbitration Lecture featured international arbitration specialist David W. Rivkin (Partner, Debevoise & Plimpton) on “Post-Pandemic Arbitration: Will It Be Contact-Free?” The world of international arbitration moved rapidly to continue to serve its users during the pandemic. During the lecture, David W. Rivkin discussed the lessons we have learned and how they can be adapted to improve arbitration in the post-pandemic world.     November 7-10, 2019 - Foreign Direct Invest (FDI) International Arbitration Moot

    Miami Law’s IA LL.M. and IA Institute spearheaded hosting the Foreign Direct Invest (FDI) International Arbitration Moot competition at Miami Law. Over 350 students, coaches, and arbitrators from around the globe attended the event on campus. As part of the FDI Moot, Miami Law’s IA LL.M., in collaboration with the young practitioners network of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (Young ICCA) also organized a Skills Training Workshop on Interim and Provisional Measures International Arbitration, featuring Cristina Cardenas (Partner, Reed Smith; Miami Law IA Adjunct Professor), Juan C. Garcia (Counsel, Hogan Lovells), and Silvia Marchili (Partner, White & Case, Miami) for legal practitioners and current students.5 On-campus.     March 14, 2018 – Blockchain ADR Revealed: Conflict Resolution at the Onset of the Fourth Industrial Revolution

    The Global Legal Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution Center in collaboration with the University of Miami School of Law’s International Arbitration Institute held a conference on blockchain technology at the University of Sao Paolo on March 14, 2018. Professor Marike Paulsson, Director of the International Arbitration Institute, and International Arbitration LL.M. Graduate Program Alumnus, Alexander Fischetti, participated in organizing the event and were among a group of diverse and renowned speakers. All of which can be viewed in the link below. The conference discussed how blockchain technology will provide solutions and enable the evolution of conflict resolution in the coming fourth industrial revolution.

    February 17, 2016 – New York Convention Roadshow – Jointly organized with ICCA in Costa Rica.

    February 17, 2016 – International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) & Miami Law International Arbitration Institute held New York Convention Roadshow at the Supreme Court in San Jose, Costa Rica, featuring Professor Jan Paulsson and Director of the Institute, Marike Paulsson with about 70 judges, judges-in-training and lawyers in attendance. The Roadshow focused on the proper appellation of the New York Convention in Costa Rica and established a platform for lawyers and judges to interact.
