Judge Ellen Sue Venzer is a Circuit Court Judge in the Criminal Division of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida in Miami and the University of Miami’s Judge-in-Residence. Judge Venzer graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 1987 following a B.B.A. in 1984. Prior to her 1995 investiture to Florida’s Eleventh Criminal Circuit, Judge Venzer was a practicing trial lawyer specializing in lender liability, director and officer liability and securities litigation.
She has presided over felony criminal circuit court cases since her elevation by then-governor Jeb Bush in 2004. Judge Venzer is also the inaugural Judge in Residence at the University of Miami, where she is spearheading a year-long lecture series in which students explore pressing legal issues through gatherings that stimulate thought and action. She teaches both undergraduate and law school classes focusing on criminal justice, sentencing and children’s law.
