The Miami Law & AI (MiLA) Lab was established in 2024 at the University of Miami School of Law as a response to the rapidly evolving landscape of AI and its profound impact on the legal domain. Recognizing the need for a dedicated space to explore, understand, and shape the intersection of law and AI, Miami Law envisioned a hub that would bridge the gap between legal expertise and technological innovation while bearing in mind the practical needs of law students, faculty, and practitioners. The MiLA Lab is a dynamic, interdisciplinary institute that brings together scholars, practitioners, and students in the fields of law, AI, computer science, and ethics. This diverse team collaborates to tackle the complex challenges and opportunities AI presents in the legal domain. The Lab serves as a nexus for cutting-edge research, practical tool development, and forward-thinking policy recommendations. At the MiLA Lab, our mission is twofold: 1. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: We believe that the most innovative solutions arise from the convergence of diverse perspectives. By fostering collaboration between legal experts and technologists, we create a unique environment for breakthrough ideas and practical applications. 2. Rigorous Research: Our work is grounded in rigorous academic research. We conduct in-depth studies on the impact of AI on various aspects of law, from legal reasoning to judicial decision-making. 3. Practical Application: We don't just theorize—we create. Our Lab develops and evaluates AI tools specifically designed for legal applications, bridging the gap between cutting-edge academic research and real-world implementation. 4. Ethical Considerations: At the core of our work is a commitment to ethical AI development and deployment. We actively engage with questions of bias, transparency, explainability, and accountability in AI systems. While these issues are of high significance in any field, they are particularly important in the legal domain.Who We Are
