"The LLM with Intensive English is the program that I was looking for. As a student in this program you will have to prepare for a lot of lectures, reading, and homework, but all of the effort and hard work that you put into the program will be beneficial as they provide the base for your next step at Miami Law. After I complete my LL.M. I plan to take the New York Bar and practice Immigration Law."

What is unique about the program?

"The program is a wonderful way to introduce students to the U.S. law school and prepare them for their LL.M. In 'Introduction to Legal Communication and Writing,' students receive unique, specifically-tailored training to enhance their U.S. legal reasoning, writing, and communication skills. I have seen students successfully complete this Introduction course and then excel at the start of their LL.M. at Miami Law."

"Going back to Law School in a foreign country is a challenge. I decided to enroll in this program because it was the best option for me. It has been the first step to get the high quality education I was looking for. Now I am planning on completing my JD in addition to my LL.M. in Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law."

What are the Courses? The Schedule?

This program starts in the Spring semester in January. During the first semester, students focus on achieving the English language and communication skills necessary to be successful in their LL.M. program. After successful completion of their first semester, students join their LL.M. and proceed with the regular course of studies selecting courses from Miami Law’s extensive Course Catalog based on their interests and career goals.

Intensive Legal English Course Descriptions

 Oral Communication for LL.M.

This course refines oral communication skills of international students in the Intensive Legal English + LL.M. program. Speaking clearly and persuasively to a variety of legal and lay-audiences is an essential skill in law school and the practice of law. Students practice debating, leading and participating in discussions related to the law, and preparing and delivering at least two formal presentations about cases. The course also focuses on role plays involving phone calls, interviews, mediation and negotiation. Grammar and pronunciation lessons are presented, monitored and edited both by the instructor and the students themselves. A central component of the course is mastery of both general academic and legal vocabulary.

 Reading and Writing for LL.M.

This course refines reading and writing skills of international students in the Intensive Legal English + LL.M. program. The course integrates reading comprehension with grammar and writing skill-building activities and assignments. Furthermore the course provides a variety of reading materials to both expand students’ knowledge of English language legal terminology as well as foundational concepts relevant to the U.S. legal system. Students are introduced to varied writing styles with an emphasis on persuasion, argument, and critical analysis, and they are provided opportunities to meet with their instructor and revise their written work.

"Enrolling in the three semester LLM has provided me the opportunity to improve my legal English and engage in the Miami Law legal community. UM is like a small town inside of a big city and starting the program a semester earlier has given me the time I needed to acclimate, make friends at the law school, and explore Miami."
