Miami Law now offers an exchange agreement with the Universidade de São Paulo Law School (USP) in São Paulo, Brazil.
University of São Paulo is one of the most prestigious higher education and research institutions in Brazil. USP was founded in 1934, it has 48 schools and specialized institutes, 4 physical museums and 4 major hospitals and it has become an internationally recognized center of excellence in many fields of research. As one of the country’s most prestigious institutions, it is estimated that more than 25% of the articles published by Brazilian researchers in high quality conferences and journals are produced at the University of São Paulo. The Faculty of Law is located in the Ribeirão Preto campus, known for its beautiful park-like setting and its academic excellence.
Fall (August – December) and Spring (February – June).
The University of São Paulo has created an office for students with disabilities (PROAE) which provides academic accommodations and support services to students with disabilities. You can visit their website here. The university has made a number of efforts to make its campuses more accessible including providing wheelchair ramps and elevators at all entrances and buildings, installing braille signage and audio description devices, etc. All exchange students have access to the university’s restaurants, several of the campuses also offer free bus transportation.
The language of instruction for most courses is Portuguese, however there are a few courses taught in English. The list of available courses is can be found here. Not all courses offered in English are available every semester, and there is no guarantee that the courses will be able to accommodate exchange students.
Students may not transfer foreign language or other non-law courses taken at the partner exchange school back to Miami Law for J.D. credit. If a student enrolls in such courses, they understand they are for self-interest only and will not be considered for transfer towards their J.D. degree.
USP does not offer housing for exchange students within their campuses. Housing must be done by the students according to their needs and budget. USP strongly recommends that exchange students take part in the USP iFriends programme in order for them to get assistance with finding accommodation. The International Office will send necessary information on housing to accepted students.
Students participating in Miami Law’s semester abroad program will pay regular full-time Miami Law tuition for the semester that they study abroad. During the semester abroad, University of Miami on-campus fees will not be charged. Students generally will not owe tuition to a partner exchange school while studying abroad through Miami Law’s International Exchange Programs, as long as they stay within the host institution’s credit limits (if applicable). Some administrative fees may apply. Exchange students will need to provide USP evidence of medical insurance or appropriate and valid travel medical insurance policy for registration upon arrival. Students should consider additional costs including flights, housing, personal expenses, visa fees, etc. For more information, please click here.
