University of Los Andes School of Law Colombian Exchange Program

Uniandes is a private research university in Bogota. Bogota is the capital of Colombia, and with a population of approximately 8 million also its largest city. A cosmopolitan city with many cultural attractions and venues, Bogota was declared a World Book Capital by UNESCO and the Iberoamerican Capital of Culture by the Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities. Uniandes is considered one of the leading universities in South America and the top school in Colombia. Its student community is made up of approximately 14,500 undergraduates, 3,500 post-graduates, 400 PhD students, and 700 post-graduate diploma students. Situated in the heart of Bogota, the university boasts 50,000 square meters of green space and woodland, as well as 163 laboratories, a sports center with a semi-Olympic swimming pool, and facilities accommodating 45 different sports. Every semester the university welcomes approximately 200 international students.

Course Offerings

Students are responsible for choosing the courses according to the necessary requirements. It is important to remember that the University applies the “first come, first served” rule. If you do not register on time, it will be difficult to find seats for the courses of your choice. Students may not transfer foreign language or other non-law courses taken at the partner exchange school back to Miami Law for J.D. credit. If a student enrolls in such courses, they understand they are for self-interest only and will not be considered for transfer towards their J.D. degree.

  • Student Housing

    Each student is responsible for finding their own accommodation. The Uniandes housing team offers housing services in our allied residences in a safe and comfortable environment. We have furnished apartments with internet service, cable TV, kitchen, and common areas.

  • Cost of Attendance

    Students participating in Miami Law’s semester abroad program will pay regular full-time Miami Law tuition for the semester that they study abroad. During the semester abroad, University of Miami on-campus fees will not be charged.

    Living expenses will vary depending on the student's lifestyle and location. A 5-month stay in Bogota is estimated to cost $4,300: this includes Room $1,600, Board $860, Installation Budget $370, Transportation $765 &  Misc $735.

  • Language of Instruction

    Most classes are taught in Spanish. Therefore, Miami Law students participating in an exchange semester at Uniandes must have at least an intermediate B2 Spanish language proficiency level in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). 

  • Requirements for Student Performance and Grading Methods

    The class format at Uniandes is based on lectures, readings, class participation and self-study. Students are expected to attend all lectures, to complete all course-related assignments and readings, and to sit for all exams to receive a course grade. The academic semester has 16 weeks of class; however, some courses are taught in an 8-week period. The grading scale is as follows:

    Students also must comply with Miami Law’s International Exchange Policies & Procedures. Students should aim to take at least the equivalent of 11 Miami Law credits while studying abroad; they can earn a maximum of 14 Miami Law credits from a study abroad semester. Additional rules regarding eligible course work and credit transfer back to Miami Law apply.
