Peking University School of Transnational Law Exchange Program

Miami Law now has an exchange program with the Peking University School of Transnational Law (STL) in Shenzhen, China.

Peking University School of Transnational Law was established in 2008 as a part of the Shenzhen Graduate School at Peking University. Peking University School of Transnational Law is the first program to offer a western-style Juris Doctor curriculum alongside a Chinese-style Juris Master curriculum. The program provides an innovative and transnational approach to the legal field, creating cross-cultural legal education for students. Peking University School of Transnational Law is located in Shenzhen, China. Situated in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, Shenzhen is part of a regional initiative that focuses on innovation and modernization. Shenzhen is a hub for internationalization and is referred to as the “Silicon Valley of China.”

Semester Dates

Peking University School of Transnational Law follows a quarter system. Quarters that closely follow the semester schedule of Miami Law are eligible for the exchange program. Quarter One is from August 19 to November 3. Quarter Three is from February 17 to April 27. Thus, the international exchange program at Peking University School of Transnational Law is available in Quarters One and Three.

Course Offerings

Students will need to register for courses in person. This must be done at the School of Transnational Law building at the Peking University Shenzhen campus at the beginning of Quarters One and Three. Students should consider the following important dates for course enrollment:

  • Mid-August: Beginning of Quarter One
  • Mid-February: Beginning of Quarter Three

Students may not transfer foreign language or other non-law courses taken at the partner exchange school back to Miami Law for J.D. credit. If a student enrolls in such courses, they understand they are for self-interest only and will not be considered for transfer towards their J.D. degree.

  • Student Housing

    Peking University School of Transnational Law does not offer student housing for exchange students. International students may apply for housing in Zhongguanyuan Global Village, located next to the university. For more information on Zhongguanyuan Global Village, please visit this link. Student may also rent a private apartment located near the university in an area such as Wudaokou.

  • Cost of Attendance

    Students participating in Miami Law’s semester abroad program will pay regular full-time Miami Law tuition for the semester that they study abroad. During the semester abroad, University of Miami on-campus fees will not be charged.

    Students generally will not owe tuition to a partner exchange school while studying abroad through Miami Law’s International Exchange Programs, as long as they stay within the host institution’s credit limits (if applicable). Some administrative fees may apply. 

    Living expenses might vary on the student’s lifestyle and preferences. The following are estimated living expenses in Shenzhen:

    • Housing: 1,000-1,500 CNY per month
    • Books and Materials: 800 CNY per quarter
    • Transportation: 1,200 CNY per month

  • Language of Instruction

    Courses open to exchange students are taught in English. Some courses in Chinese language are available only if the student is fluent in Chinese language. It is recommended that all incoming students have a basic level of Chinese language ability.

  • Requirements for Student Performance and Grading Methods

    The grading scale at Peking University School of Transnational Law is from A+ to F. Courses are generally evaluated based on the quality of work submitted by the student. Exams are graded anonymously. Regular and punctual attendance is required in all courses.
