Exchange Program with Ghent University Law School

Miami Law’s exchange program with Ghent University, Ghent Belgium is a one-semester exchange opportunity.

Ghent University was founded in 1817 and it is located in Ghent, Belgium. The Law School is located in the historic center of Ghent and blends historic buildings with modern teaching facilities. Ghent University is one of the leading institutions of higher education and research in Belgium. The city of Ghent is a beautiful historic city of about 350,000 inhabitants with a medieval center and a modern, active, economic, and cultural life. It is located a short 30-minute train ride from Brussels.

Spring semester only from February to July.

Accessibility

Ghent University has facilities for students with a learning or physical disability. Students with special accommodations can rely on the support services, which offer material, technical, and social aid. Ghent University offers building and lift accessibility to wheelchair users and well as adapted sanitary facilities, you can find more information on the accessibility of buildings for wheelchair users as well as accessibility route maps here. Ghent University also offers special parking for people with disabilities, staff members and students of Ghent University who are in possession of a parking card for people with disabilities can request access to all university’s car parks. Course Offerings

The Exchange Program in Law covers a wide range of English-taught courses from the regular Master’s programs: Master in Laws and Master in Criminological Science, as well as from the three LL.M. programs in International and European Law, International Business Law and European Law. Please visit Ghent University’s Exchange Program Study Guide for a full list of course offerings. Not all courses offered in English are available every semester, and there is no guarantee that the courses will be able to accommodate exchange students.

Students may not transfer foreign language or other non-law courses taken at the partner exchange school back to Miami Law for J.D. credit. If a student enrolls in such courses, they understand they are for self-interest only and will not be considered for transfer towards their J.D. degree.

  • Student Housing

    On campus housing is available, once accepted as an exchange student at Ghent University, you will be able to apply for housing. For more information on housing costs, location and availability please follow this link. Housing accommodation prices vary, for example a ‘Room Plus’ rental can be between €480-€550.     Exchange students can also find private housing, the university will not provide assistance with this, but they have provided a list of resources for students looking for private housing, please find the resources here.

  • Cost of Attendance

    Students participating in Miami Law’s semester abroad program will pay regular full-time Miami Law tuition for the semester that they study abroad. During the semester abroad, University of Miami on-campus fees will not be charged.

    Students generally will not owe tuition to a partner exchange school while studying abroad through Miami Law’s International Exchange Programs, as long as they stay within the host institution’s credit limits (if applicable). Some administrative fees may apply.

    Students should consider additional living expenses e.g. transportation, meals, leisure activities, books and school supplies as well as any visa or travel costs.

    Exchange students will also have to purchase mandatory health insurance.

    Exchange students will need to complete a program with approximately 30 ECTS-credits per semester, the minimum per semester is 27 ECTS-credits.

    Students also must comply with Miami Law’s International Exchange Policies & Procedures.  Students should aim to take at least the equivalent of 11 Miami Law credits while studying abroad; they can earn a maximum of 14 Miami Law credits from a study abroad semester. Additional rules regarding eligible course work and credit transfer back to Miami Law apply.

  • Fall Semester – Students must apply for nomination by February 1
  • Spring Semester – Students must apply for nomination by September 1
