Video games are an inescapable phenomenon and an unstoppable force. By way of example, annual sales from the distribution of video games far exceeds annual revenue from the distribution of motion pictures; and we have every reason to expect this trend to continue without interruption. Mr. Greenspan will speak on how we got to where we are, and what lies ahead for the creators, publishers and users of video games.

David Greenspan, Lecturer, Santa Clara University School of Law; lead author of the book entitled Mastering the Game: Business and Legal Issues for Video Game Developers

Financial Decisions in the Sport and Entertainment Industry - This year’s panel will focus on preserving and protecting assets of the successful entertainment and sports client. Social Media makes it virtually impossible for the high profile client to enjoy his or her privacy. However, with proper legal and financial planning, high net-work clients can protect their assets from unnecessary and unwelcome public disclosure and from the claims of their creditors. The panel will discuss various planning techniques and strategies, including the interrelationship of business entities and trusts, both domestic and international, that a celebrity client may implement in order to achieve a comprehensive tax and financial plan.

Moderator: Warren Whisenant, Professor and Department Chair, University of Miami Department of Kinesiology and Sports Sciences, School of Education & Human Development

Representing Creatives - Writers, producers, designers, and all creatives entrepreneurs face challenges and opportunities as social media and new applications create instant, viral, global audiences of unknowns. What used to be "craft," vetted through financial gatekeepers and levels of critique and acceptance from industry experts,  can now be bypassed by a click for anyone who has a phone. What does this mean for lawyers whose clients are working in today’s media environment? How can you maximize your client’s business structure and manage risk? As well, how can you effectively negotiate writer deals when publishers are themselves using self-publishing strategies? The panel will discuss how to navigate the increasing complexity of intellectual property rights, licensing, distribution, branding, endorsement, and sponsorship deals.
