In 2020 the International Arbitration Program continued with distinguished lectures, partnerships and student accomplishments. Some highlights:

The Rise of International Arbitration Discussed at 6th Annual White & Case Lecture

Miami Law’s International Arbitration Institute, in collaboration with the Miami Law International Moot Court Board, hosted its sixth annual White & Case International Arbitration Lecture featuring guest speaker Gabrielle Kaufmann-Kohler, president of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), who discussed the rise of International Arbitration throughout the last century and provided an analysis on the methods for reform being discussed in the field today.

U.S. Supreme Court Rules in Accordance with Amicus Curiae Brief Drafted with Help from International Arbitration LL.M. Students

Eleven students from the White & Case International Arbitration LL.M. Program, under the supervision of Sandra Friedrich, lecturer in law and director of Miami Law’s International Arbitration Institute and LL.M. Program, assisted the Miami International Arbitration Society in researching and drafting an amicus curiae brief to the U.S. Supreme Court.

International Moot Team Wins Multiple Awards, Places in Top 5 out of 77 Teams at 2020 Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Moot

Following back-to-back final rounds from November 4 through 9, which were conducted virtually from Seoul, South Korea, Miami Law’s team placed fifth out of 77 teams and received the second highest oralist scores. Out of 242 individual oralists, Miami Law students ranked among the top ten, at fourth and sixth.

Students Sharpen Legal Writing and Rank in Top 10 in International Maritime Arbitration Moot

One of the most prestigious competitions centered around maritime law, the Miami Law team earned one of the top 10 highest scores in the 21st annual International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot.  The team was the only U.S. law school to participate and was also commended for pressing forward with the IMLA Moot despite the pandemic, which had led to the cancellation of the final oral rounds that had been scheduled to occur in Singapore.

Celebrating 10 Years of Miami Law & Young ICCA Partnership 

Young ICCA, the young practitioners’ group of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration, this spring celebrated its full-tuition scholarship partnership with University of Miami School of Law along with its own 10th anniversary of providing educational resources, practical training, and mentorship networks in the field of international arbitration to young practitioners and students from around the globe. Since the Miami Law/Young ICCA partnership began in 2012, the scholarship has been awarded to eight outstanding students from around the globe, including Canada, Ecuador, India, Italy, Ukraine, and Venezuela.
