Miami Law’s Charles C. Papy Moot Court team of Dan Halperin, 3L J.D./M.B.A., Adam Stolz, 3L, and Luis Reyes, 3L, won first place at the regional 11th Circuit Bankruptcy competition for the 2018 Cristol, Kahn, Paskay Cup. Halperin was also awarded best oralist in the competition. In 2016, Miami Law also came in first place at the CPK Cup.

The CKP Cup serves as the regional warm-up for Duberstein National Bankruptcy Competition. Law schools from the Eleventh Circuit (Florida, Georgia, and Alabama) compete in the CKP before heading to New York City in early March for the national Duberstein bankruptcy competition. In past years at the Duberstein Moot, Miami Law has placed very well with 2nd in 2017 and 2nd in 2015.
“Winning CKP was an amazing experience,” said Halperin. “However, none of this would have been possible without the help of our amazing coaches: Professor Patricia Redmond, [Director of Miami Law's Bankruptcy Assistance Clinic] Leah Aaronson, Freddi Mack, and Dan Narciso. They continually pushed us during the preparation process to think outside the box. I cannot thank them enough.”
The Duberstein National Bankruptcy Competition will be held this year on March 3-5 at St. John’s University School of Law.
“A lot of hard work went into preparing for the competition; we owe much of our success to the coaches and other attorneys that volunteered their time to help us practice,” said Stolz. “The competition was a great opportunity to practice and receive feedback on our oral argument skills.
"The UM Moot Court Board did an excellent job putting on the competition. The win felt great, but we still have more work to do so we can have similar success at our upcoming competition in New York.”
The CKP Cup is named in honor of three federal bankruptcy judges who serve or have served in the 11th Circuit: A. Jay Cristol of the Southern District of Florida; A. David Kahn of the Northern District of Georgia; and Alexander L. Paskay of the Middle District of Florida. Judge Cristol, J.D. '59 not only teaches Bankruptcy Law at Miami Law but also the Eleanor R. Cristol and Judge A. Jay Cristol Bankruptcy Pro Bono Assistance Clinic is named in his and his wife's honor.
“I look forward to building off this success and representing the University of Miami in NY,” said Halperin. “Go Canes!”
