Richard Susskind, Authority on the Transformation of Legal Practice and Services, to Lecture


Miami Law will host Professor Richard Susskind as part of the inaugural lecture of the Larry J. Hoffman, Greenberg Traurig Distinguished Visiting Professorship in the Business of Law. He will be delivering a presentation based on his book, Tomorrow's Lawyers, on Wednesday, October 30th at 5:30 p.m. at the Newman Alumni Center.

Susskind, Order of the British Empire, is an author, speaker, and independent advisor to major professional firms and to national governments. His main area of expertise is the future of professional service and, in particular, the way in which IT and the Internet are changing the work of lawyers.

Susskind has worked on legal technology for over 30 years. He lectures internationally and is the author of eight books. In his latest book, Tomorrow's Lawyers (2013), he claims that legal institutions and lawyers are poised to change more radically over the next two decades than they have over the last two centuries.

He is President of the Society for Computers and Law, IT Adviser to the Lord Chief Justice of England, and Chair of the Advisory Board of the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University. In addition to Tomorrow's Lawyers, he has written and edited numerous books, including The Future of LawTransforming the Law, and The End of Lawyers?, and has written around 150 columns for The Times. His work has been translated into ten languages. Susskind holds professorships at Oxford University; University College, London; Gresham College, London; and Strathclyde University is his native Glasgow. Susskind has a doctorate in computers and law from Oxford University.

The Larry J. Hoffman, Greenberg Traurig Distinguished Visiting Professorship in the Business of Law was established in 2006 by the Greenberg Traurig firm to honor Larry J. Hoffman, JD ‘54. The professorship supports a series of visiting professors and/or lectures on the business of law.

Hoffman is Founding Chairman of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Greenberg Traurig. Having practiced in the areas of corporate, securities and banking law for over 40 years, he has devoted most of his time and effort in the last 15 years to participating in the active management of the firm and is a well-known student of and authority on law firm management. He has been listed in Super Lawyers magazine; Florida Super Lawyers, 2006 – 2009; and The Best Lawyers in America, Corporate Law, 1989 – 2014.

Not only does Hoffman hold a degree from Miami Law, his wife, Deborah, JD '83, and son, Kenneth, JD '83 do also. A long-time supporter of the law school, Hoffman has also taught securities, tax, and corporate law as part of a course in Advanced Business Planning and serves as the School's Momentum2 Campaign Co-Vice Chair. He is an exceptionally generous supporter of the law school and the university.
