The Career Development Office invites students, alumni and employers to review the following policies as they relate to the recruitment of students. All policies are established to protect the interests of students and employers, and to ensure a fair and professional recruitment process.
Access to the Symplicity system is granted only to University of Miami School of Law students and graduates. Students officially visiting the School of Law for a semester or year will also be granted access for the duration of their enrollment at the School of Law. University of Miami School of Law students and graduates are expected to protect their Symplicity login information by not sharing that information with those outside the School of Law. Sharing of this information can result in loss of use of this service.
Symplicity Job Posting Database Policy
The Symplicity Job Posting Database is a free service provided to employers, University of Miami School of Law students and University of Miami School of Law graduates. The Career Development Office makes no warranty as to the suitability or performance of the advertised positions or of employers advertising positions through this service. The Career Development Office does not warrant or represent that any posting or opportunity, whether paid or unpaid, complies with the Fair Labor Standards Act and/or other federal and state labor and employment laws.
NALP Principles for a Fair and Ethical Recruitment Process
University of Miami School of Law subscribes to the NALP Principles for a Fair and Ethical Recruitment Process, designed to ensure professionalism, fairness, transparency and non-discrimination throughout the recruitment process. Miami Law students and employers participating in the recruitment process are expected to adhere to these principals. Read the NALP Principles for a Fair and Ethical Recruitment Process.
Interview Cancellation and No-Show Policies
University of Miami School of Law implements its Interview Cancellation and No-Show Policies for its recruiting programs because a student’s failure to appear for an interview reflects negatively upon the law school and its students. The policy is also designed to prevent students from losing opportunities to interview due to another student’s failure to appear.
Students who are selected for an interview during a recruiting program must accept the interview and sign up for an interview time or decline the interview by the stated deadline. Should a serious emergency arise, for which a student cannot make the scheduled interview time, the student must notify the CDO as soon as possible but no later than 24 hours prior to the interview. Students who accept a job offer and wish to cancel remaining interviews should submit a written notification of withdrawal from the program.
No Show Policy
Students who fail to appear for an interview will be suspended from the privileges of the Career Development Office, including its recruiting programs, until they meet with a CDO advisor and send a letter of apology and explanation to the interviewer with a copy to the CDO. Any student who subsequently cancels or fails to appear for an interview without timely notice will lose interviewing privileges for the remainder of the semester. General Policy on Accepting, Declining and Rescinding Offers
Students are expected to approach all offers of employment with professionalism by acknowledging receipt of offers within 24 hours and making a decision within the timeframe agreed upon by the student and employer. Once an offer is accepted, students must honor that acceptance and cannot rescind that offer to take a subsequent offer. Rescinding an acceptance is unprofessional and reflects poorly on the student and the law school. The CDO recognizes that extenuating circumstances may occur that warrant a student to rescind an acceptance of an offer. In such situations, a student’s first step is to contact their CDO advisor. Students should not contact the employer prior to speaking with a CDO advisor.
Recruiting Program Policy on Accepting, Declining and Rescinding Offers
Students participating in the CDO’s Recruiting Program must adhere to its Recruiting Program Policy on Accepting, Declining and Rescinding Offers, which states that once a student accepts an offer, they are required to report their acceptance of the offer to the CDO and agree not to participate in any further recruiting efforts during the recruiting program. A student who continues to apply and interview for opportunities after accepting an offer may be subject to reprimand, and this will be disclosed to the Bar as a matter of character and fitness. To ensure compliance with this policy, students are encouraged to take time to consider all offers carefully and to discuss their options with their CDO advisor.
Event Cancellation and No-Show Policies
University of Miami School of Law implements its Events Cancellation and No-Show Policies for events it promotes because a student’s failure to appear for an event reflects negatively upon the law school and its students. The policy is also designed to prevent students from losing opportunities to attend events due to another student’s failure to appear.
Event Cancellation Policy
Students who accept an invitation to attend an event promoted by the Career Development Office are expected to honor this commitment. Should a conflict arise that will prevent the student from honoring this commitment, the student must notify the CDO and the event hosts (when known) as soon as possible but no later than 24 hours prior to the event.
No Show Policy
Students who fail to appear at an event for which they accepted an invitation will be suspended from the privileges of attending future events promoted by the Career Development Office until they meet with a CDO advisor and send a letter of apology and explanation to the event hosts, with a copy to the CDO. Any student who subsequently cancels or fails to appear at an event without timely notice will lose such privileges for the remainder of the semester.
University of Miami Non-Discrimination Policy
Employers who utilize the Career Development Office's programs and services, including recruiting programs and its job posting database, must adhere to the University's Non-Discrimination Policy:
It is the policy of the University of Miami that no person within the jurisdiction thereof shall, on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information or any other protected factor be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination or harassment (including all forms of sexual harassment and sexual violence) under any program or activity of the University, regardless of whether such program or activity occurs on-campus or off-campus. Retaliation against an individual who files a complaint of discrimination, opposes a policy/procedure/practice because he/she/they believes it to be discriminatory, or who participates in the investigation of a discrimination complaint, is prohibited.
Military Recruitment at University of Miami School of Law
A limited exception to the University of Miami Non-Discrimination Policy is in place for the United States Military, and military recruiters are permitted to recruit on campus. In allowing military recruitment on campus, the University of Miami School of Law acknowledges that the military’s hiring and retention policies are inconsistent with the Non-Discrimination Policy and Miami Law’s overall commitment to a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students. Under the Solomon Amendment, passed by the United States Congress in 1996, law schools which bar the military from its campuses jeopardize their receipt of federal funding, which can include financial aid funding. Miami Law’s decision to permit military recruiters on campus is in response to the Solomon Amendment and is not an acceptance of the military’s discriminatory hiring and retention policies.
Preferred Name, Gender Marker, and Gender Pronouns Policy
The School of Law seeks to ensure that the University of Miami School of Law is a safe and inclusive environment for the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) community. The intention of this policy is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for students who identify as transgender, non-binary, or gender nonconforming at the University of Miami School of Law. Students have the right to be addressed by a name, gender marker, and set of gender pronouns that corresponds to the student’s gender identity. The School of Law’s Preferred Name, Gender Marker, and Gender Pronouns policy is available in the School of Law’s Student Handbook, pages 8-9.
