Jack Townsend began his undergraduate career at University of Miami in 2011 as a Dual Degree Honors Student on the Pre-Law Track. As an undergraduate student, Jack pursued a major in International Studies and a minor in the Classics. He also spent a semester at the University of London studying Post-Colonial English Literature.
Townsend then began Law School in 2014 pursuing both a J.D. and an LL.M. in International Law. As a rising 2L student, he had the opportunity to serve as a legal intern at the Department of Environmental Protection in Tallahassee. There, he worked in the Programs Section collaborating with staff attorneys on environmental rule and statute rewrites.
During his time in law school, Townsend served as a Dean’s Fellow for five consecutive semesters alternating between Torts in the Fall and Constitutional Law in the Spring. As a second-year law student, Townsend also served as an intern for two programs within UM Law’s Center for Ethics and Public Service: the Environmental Justice Project, and the Social Enterprise Clinic. Both programs centered on providing social justice focused, pro-bono legal services to individuals and organizations within the historic West Grove. As a rising 3L, Townsend traveled to Frankfurt, Germany where he completed a certificate program in European Union Business & Banking Law at EBS Universität. In 2017 Townsend graduated Magna Cum Laude from UM Law as a triple Cane. Shortly before graduation, Townsend was selected as the 2017 recipient of the Roger Sorino Award for Dedication, Leadership, and Service to the Law School Community.
A few months after graduation, Townsend was sworn in as a member of the Florida Bar and thereafter pursued a career in litigation. Townsend became an Associate Attorney at Scherer & Marx, PLLC a full-service firm located in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Over the next three years, he represented a diverse array of clients from municipalities to insurance companies, to individual homeowners in both state and federal court. Townsend worked on cases including secondary banking liability claims against financial institutions for aiding and abetting fraud, mold litigation between commercial landlords and tenants, director and officer liability claims, federal first amendment claims, and various other business tort and contract claims.
