Class of 1948

David Solomon Solovey, J.D. '48, passed away on February 8, 2018, at the age of 86. After graduating from law school, Solovey joined the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Bureau of Hearings and Appeals in Washington, DC where he remained for 25 years. Upon his retirement from the government, he managed his real estate holdings and in later years volunteered his time singing at local nursing homes. He is survived by his wife, Traci. (February 2018)

Class of 1950

Harold P. Kravitz, J.D. '50, passed away on January 4, 2018 at the age of 93. His daughter, the Honorable Shelley Kravitz, passed away just two days earlier. Kravitz was a member of the Dade Florida Bar Association and for over 50 years, practiced law in the areas of banking, municipal law, insurance, automotive and construction industries, and ERISA trusts. Kravitz was also a director and chairman of several banks. He was a paratrooper during WWII and was one of a very select American recipients of the Legion of Honor, the highest French order of military merit. (January 2018)

Burton Young, J.D. '50, was awarded the 2018 Honorable Theodore "Ted" Klein Lifetime Achievement Award by the Attorneys' Division of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. He was recognized at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation's 34th Annual Judicial Reception on January 22, 2018. (January 2018)

Harry Bernard Smith, J.D. '50, passed away on February 3, 2018. He founded the Smith and Mandler law firm with partner Bernard Mandler and his brother Sam Smith. In 1984, he merged Smith and Mandler with Ruden McClosky. For 19 years, Harry was bestowed the honor of “Best Lawyers in America.” Respected not only as a lawyer but as a philanthropist, Harry was the President of the Miami Bar Association, President of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and National Vice President of the Council of Jewish Federations. A member of Temple Beth Shalom since its inception, he served on its Board of Directors. He was also on the Board of the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts and United Way of Dade County. (February 2018)

Class of 1952

Harold Rosen, J.D. '52, passed away on January 16, 2018 at the age of 92. Rosen moved to Miami Beach in 1948 after growing up in Carthage, New York. He served as mayor of Miami Beach from 1974 to 1977, where he contributed to the transformation of the island city from a sandspit composed of rent control and a large elderly population to the billion-dollar resort city it is today. One of his major accomplishments includes his work as a lobbyist, where he helped an engineering and consulting firm in 2001 receive the city’s largest contract at the time to manage over $200 million in public right-of-way projects. He is survived by his wife, sister, two children, 10 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. (January 2018)

Paul Levine, J.D. '73, released his most recent novel, a legal thriller, BUM LUCK. The novel was debuted on paperback and EBook format. The storyline centers around a former Miami Dolphin linebacker who heads to law school and becomes a trouble-prone trial lawyer, vowing to kill his own client. His pals feared that the linebacker-turned-lawyer is insane and that his numerous concussions suffered playing football have caught up with him.

Richard Rappaport, J.D. '73, passed away on December 16, 2017. Rappaport was a renowned entertainment lawyer with offices located in Boca Raton and Miami Beach. He advised entertainment clients in legal and business affairs, including the development, production, financing, and distribution of motion pictures, television broadcast programming, cable television and premium television programming, and direct broadcast satellite television programming. He was a board member of the University of Miami Law Alumni Association and of the Governing Board and Executive Committee of the American Bar Association Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries. Rappaport was a Martindale Hubbell AV Preeminent rated attorney and was named in the 2006 to 2017 Florida editions of “Super Lawyers” Magazine within the category of “Entertainment and Sports Law.”  Mr. Rappaport was also previously named as one of Florida Trend Magazine’s Florida “Legal Elite”.

Rob Walker Freer, J.D. '74, a Managing Director at the University of Virginia Investment Management Company (UVIMCO), retired after 36 years at UVIMCO, where he started all of the private investment programs (venture capital, buyout, real estate and energy) of the $8.5 billion endowment fund. Frank Pyle Jr., LLM.E. '77, a probate attorney in Orlando, was called to Los Angeles to testify in the penalty phase of the trial of Lonnie Franklin Jr., known as the Grim Sleeper serial killer, 41 years after Pyle, an Army JAG officer at the time, was assigned to monitor Franklin's 1974 trial in Germany in which Franklin and two other men were convicted of kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old German girl.

Hilarie Bass, J.D. '81, co-president of Greenberg Traurig Law firm, is President of the American Bar Association. She also was recognized by the Daily Business Review for outstanding service to and lifetime achievements in the Florida legal community. Bass has successfully represented high-profile corporate clients in jury and non-jury trials and has been actively involved with the ABA for more than 30 years in several roles. She is best known for leading the effort to eliminate Florida's 20-year-old ban on gay adoption, which led to the state removing questions on secual orientation from adoption applications.

Debra Scholl, J.D. '81 and Dennis Scholl, J.D. '81, recently hosted a Table of Eight dinner at Macchialina, a rustic Italian restaurant in Miami Beach. Table of Eight offers Miami Law Young Alumni an opportunity to dine with a distinguished Miami Law alumnus or alumna. Before dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Scholl invited the young alumni to their Miami Beach home for a personal guided tour of their private art collection. Debra serves as chairman of Miami's Locust Projects, a not for profit exhibition space for contemporary visual artists. She previously worked as in-house counsel for City National Bank. Dennis is the president and CEO of ArtCenter/South Florida, one of Miami's longest-standing arts institutions. From 2009 to 2015, Dennis served as vice president for arts at the Knight Foundation, where he launched the groundbreaking Knight Arts Challenge and Random Acts of Culture initiatives. Dennis has also had a successful filmmaking career, earning 11 regional Emmy Awards for his cultural documentaries. In addition, he has served on various boards of the Guggenheim, Tate Modern, Pérez Art Museum Miami, Detroit Institute of Arts and the Aspen Art Museum.

Bruce A. Blitman, J.D. '81, received the 2017 Justice Teaching Volunteer of the Year Award at The Florida Bar's Annual Conference in Boca Raton. The award honors an attorney volunteer for dedication in teaching Florida students about government and the courts. Blitman was recognized for his work with teacher Sherri Moss of Bethune Elementary School in Hollywood. Blitman has been a full-time Florida Supreme Court Certified Circuit, County, and Family Mediator for 28 years.

Bruce Blitman, J.D. '81, was elected to the Dr. Nan S. Hutchison Broward Senior Hall of Fame. Blitman, a longtime attorney and mediator, was recognized for his ten years of exemplary volunteerism and hours contributed to the Broward Community. He is one of this year's ten honorees, between the ages of 61 and 93, who joined the ranks of the past 412 electees to the Hall, which honors elder excellence in the volunteer sector of Broward County, who have dedicated more than five years volunteering their precious time in the county. Judge Shelley Kravitz, J.D. '82, passed away from heart disease on January 2, 2018. She was 64 years old and Miami-Dade’s longest-tenured County Court judge. Over the last 20 years, Kravitz spent her time at county elections headquarters as the chairwoman of Miami-Dade’s county canvassing board, where she helped review questionable ballots and presided over election recounts. Kravitz grew up in Hialeah and worked in the 1970's as an elementary school teacher before earning her law degree. She and her father, Harold Kravitz, practiced together before she became a county judge in 1993. Kravitz previously served as president of the Dade County chapter of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers and also acted as a mentor for new judges. At the time of her passing, Kravitz was running for reelection and was scheduled to be honored by the Dade County Bar Association next week.

Deborah Hoffman, J.D. '83, was a 2017 Breaking the Glass Ceiling awardee at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU and Philanthropy Miami's 2016 Community Champion for her advocacy of the arts and programs for women and girls. A longtime supporter of the U, she notes that she's been a student at UM under each of its six presidents - from a junior high program during President Ashe's tenure, to her degree programs and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, to a recent class at the law school.

Franco Joseph Biscardi, J.D. '87, passed away from cancer on April 23, 2018 at the age of 56. After graduating from law school, Biscardi worked as an attorney for the City of New York, dedicating his skills to the Department of Homeless Services. His interest in interior design led him to join forces with his architect husband, spending 20 years designing homes around the Hamptons, New York, Philadelphia and Palm Beach. His work has been published in industry magazines and he has been a featured interior designer on television programs and in show houses. In the early 1990s, Biscardi worked as a sous chef for Mario Batali. He shared his expertise in cooking and entertaining in a food blog called Italian-Ate.com. (April 2018)

Laird Lile, LL.M.E. '87, is a board-certified wills, trusts and estates attorney in Naples who was recently selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America 2018 for the 22nd year in a row. Lile has previously served as a moderator for a presentation during the 37th annual Legislative and Case Law Update seminar titled, "Technology and Ethics for Resilient RPPTL in Florida: Yes, I Now Get It."
