Student Life for International Students at University of Miami School of Law

 

How many students are in the University of Miami School of Law graduate programs?
With 150 LL.M. students from more than 33 countries in our programs each year, there are many possibilities for networking, cross-cultural learning, and friendship.

In what activities can international students participate at Miami Law?
International students can participate in student organizations, write for journals/law reviews, and volunteer through the HOPE Public Interest Resource Center.

They can also get hands-on experience competing in competitions in the International Moot Court Program, participating in our clinics, and more.

Does the University have a large international community, and what services are offered for international students?

The University has one of the largest international student populations in the country, with international students worldwide. Approximately 3,750 international students (undergraduate and graduate) and scholars (professors and researchers) from 115 countries representing every region of the world study, teach, and conduct research at the University of Miami every year. International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) represents the needs and interests of the University of Miami international community and provides support services and programs for international students, scholars, and academic departments at UM. Professional Development for International Lawyers

Qualify to take a U.S. Bar Exam

Miami Law LL.M. programs offer the opportunity for foreign-trained lawyers to earn a JD + LLM program and/or take a U.S. Bar Exam. Many Miami Law LL.M. students take various state bar exams, including New York. See U.S. Bar Admissions for Foreign Lawyers for more information.

Career Advising Specifically for Foreign-Trained LL.M. Students

An experienced career advisor exclusively dedicated to foreign-trained law students assists with job searches and professional development needs, including one-on-one training on networking, resume writing, and interviewing skills. Students have access to extensive job search databases and resources on summer and academic-year positions, including international law jobs and fellowships, judicial clerkships and internships, and public interest & pro bono positions.

English Proficiency

For foreign-trained attorneys, LL.M. applicants whose native language is not English must submit English Language Proficiency Test results. TOEFL and IELTS results are accepted. For admission, the required TOEFL score is 92 internet-based or an IELTS score of 7.0. An applicant may apply for their LL.M. program of choice even without the required score, but they will not be granted admission until Miami Law receives documentation the score has been achieved. Depending upon one's score, Miami Law may require or recommend enrolling in our Intensive Legal English + LL.M.
