German Exchange Program with EBS Law School

This exchange with EBS Law School in Wiesbaden, Germany provides two distinct opportunities. UM Law is able to send up to 2 JD students to EBS for a fall semester or up to 4 JD students to EBS for the summer program they offer.  

Since the deadline for the summer program is March 1st, Miami Law will accept up to 4 students to the summer program as a priority. If the law school does not send four students, Miami Law will be able to send one or two students for fall semester. 

About EBS Law School:

The EBS Law Program is characterized by an integrated curriculum, the ability to complete an LLB degree in 3 years, and a final year designed to prepare German law students to successfully complete the 1st state exam, required to practice law in Germany.  As a private law school, ETS is regarded as the pioneer and role model for innovative and dynamic types of new German business and law schools. 

For international students, the school offers an intensive academic program in English from September to December each year.  The program includes ten weeks of lectures, one week of preparation for exams and a final exam week.   Courses are taught by law professor and legal practitioners with a particular focus on international business law. 

About Wiesbaden and Surrounding Rheingau Area:

Wiesbaden is the capital city of the state of Hesse. Wiesbaden is one of the oldest spa towns in Europe. Its name translates to "meadow baths," making reference to the hot springs. It is internationally famous for its architecture, climate (also called the "Nice of the North"), and its hot springs.  EBS Law School is located in the modern premises of the Atrium House, close to Wiesbaden Central Station. The Business School is situated in the beautiful Rheingau area on the banks of the Rhine River on the historic premises of Schloss Reichartshausen, about a 15 minute ride to Wiesbaden. 

EBS Summer Program:

The EBS Summer Law Program, which is 3 weeks long in the month of June.  (For the summer of 2016, the dates are June 6 to July 1.) EBS Law Summer is an intensive 4-week program focusing on European Business Law. Taking place in June each year, EBS Law Summer is a great opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge of the laws of the European Union and gain international experience within a short space of time. The challenging curriculum is also complemented by course-related field trips, such as to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, to ensure that students receive a well-rounded legal academic experience.

Course Structure

The course is comprised of a compulsory introductory module and six challenging electives. An Introduction to EU Law is required. In addition students may select up to six elective courses. The topics of these courses will be: (specific topics may vary by year)

  • Commercial Arbitration in Europe
  • EU Banking and Securities Laws
  • European Corporate and Company Law
  • EU Competition and Antitrust Law
  • EU Climate Protection and Emission Trading Rights
  • EU Financial Regulation

The compulsory introductory module on the law of the European Union takes place in Week 1 of the program. In weeks 2 to 4, students explore more specialist areas of EU Business Law within the various electives. All courses are taught in English. Students will receive 6 or 7 law credits depending on the number of electives selected. 

Fees and Other Costs:

Students will be required to pay a service fee which will be up to approximately $650 depending on when the student’s application is submitted.  Students should expect to pay approximately $600 for one month of off-campus housing.  Full-time summer tuition will be paid to UM. 

Tuition, Fees, Social Events & Housing:

  • Incoming exchange students: pay tuition to their home school, and required student health insurance and University fees to the University of Miami.
  • Outgoing Miami Law students: pay tuition and other required fees to the University of Miami School of Law. Miami Law students pay no tuition or fees to the partner school except for certain social events and discretionary fees.
