The Academic Program

Students enrolled in the London Summer Program will take one required 2- credit course from June 11-26 and two 2-credit courses from an offering of four courses from July 9-27.  Orientation and first day of classes will be conducted on the morning of Monday, June 11, 2007.  Eight additional classes, each of 155 minutes duration are scheduled in total between June 11 and June 27.  Examination will be held on Thursday, June 28, scheduled for late afternoon/early evening.  A break period of 10 days from June 29-July 8, 2007, follows during which students can explore Europe on their own or participate in the Italy Optional Trip provided exclusively by Contiki Holidays.  The break period does not include housing or transportation.  The Italy Optional Trip commences in Rome and ends in Venice.  Students must make their own arrangement for air travel from London to Rome and from Venice to London in order to participate in the Italy Optional Trip.

Upon return of the ten-day break period a mandatory program director’s greeting and a Plenary Lecture Session followed by the first day of classes and mandatory orientation will be conducted on Monday, July 9. Thirteen additional classes, each of 100 minutes duration are scheduled in total between July 9 and July 27.  Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29, are reading days.  Examinations will be held Monday, July 30, and Tuesday, July 31, 2007.  All courses comply with the standards of the American Bar Association and the Association of American Law Schools.  Students should contact their present law school regarding the possibility of accelerated graduation, and, where appropriate, converting semester credits to a quarter system.

Upon completion of the 2007 London Summer Program, an official transcript from the University of Miami will be mailed to the student’s law school and confirmation will be mailed to the student’s present address.  The University of Miami School of Law employs an A, B+, B, C+, C, C-, D, and F grading system.  The transferability of credits will be determined by the student’s present law school.  Inquiry should be made in advance of application.

Program Excursions

The London Summer Program incorporates a 4-day weekend trip to Paris, June 14-17.  Students will depart London on Thursday morning for Paris, returning to London late Sunday.  The excursion to Paris includes at program expense Eurostar transportation and accommodations, guided sightseeing tours including Versailles, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Eiffel Tower, as well as a mandatory Tour of Legal Paris.  The logistical component of the Paris Weekend is being arranged by Contiki Holidays.

During the second weekend, June 21-23, students will be invited to our traditional 3-day Cotswold weekend trip to the English countryside which encompasses several outstanding attractions.  The trip includes guided visits to Oxford (home of the Colleges of Oxford University), Warwick Castle (one of the finest examples of a medieval castle anywhere in Europe), Stratford-Upon-Avon (birthplace of William Shakespeare), the Roman city of Bath, and Stonehenge.

During the second session of the 2007 London Summer Program students will visit legal London including a luncheon at Middle Temple Inn and visit to Parliament.  We’ll also take you on a fascinating boat cruise highlighted by colorful commentary describing London’s key attractions visible from the River Thames.

As you can see, a significant effort is made at program expense to introduce our London Summer Program students to a wide variety of legal, cultural and historical attractions.  Student response to our fifteen previous programs centered in London has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

Three-day Weekend Break

A three-day weekend break is provided from Friday, July 21, through Sunday, July 23, so that students can explore Scotland, Ireland, Amsterdam, etc., on their own.

End of Term Party

The 2007 London Summer Program concludes with an end of term party in London co-hosted by UCL and the London Summer Program at the UCL Student Union Center.
