Obviously, the job market for legal positions this upcoming summer is extremely tight. Rather than simply settle for a non law related employment or just “hang out”, consider participating in a Summer Abroad Program. Participation has its benefits!!! Attending any summer abroad program will be very useful when seeking subsequent employment, both clerking during law school and more importantly a permanent position upon graduation. History firmly establishes that employers are impressed by the fact that a prospective employee has sought fit to continue his or her legal education. Many prospective employers enjoy hearing about a student’s experiences abroad, both in and out of the classroom, sometimes concluding with the statement, “I wish I had studied abroad when I was in law school.” Once entering the practice of law, you are extremely unlikely to be able to take even two weeks of vacation at any one time, much less leave your practice for up to seven weeks. In short, if you’re interested in really experiencing Europe, now’s the time. Very importantly: Attendance in our summer abroad program will provide up to 6 credits thus making it possible for a student not only to graduate in less than three years but more importantly to attend law school in the sixth semester with a drastically reduced credit load. Only students attending part time may work more than 20 hours a week under ABA rules. Extra time to clerk not only helps finances, but enhances later job opportunities with that employer and with others. Moreover, part time attendance results in part time tuition. Savings can be very considerable. A student taking only 6 credits in his or her last semester, depending of course on the law school attended may save over $9,000 in tuition alone. Fortunately the dollar exchange rate with the euro and pound has improved by between 25 and 30 percent compared to the summer of 2008. This savings has been passed along to prospective students. Living expenses in Europe will be less in 2009 as well. Finally, you’re only young once. Study and travel for many weeks in Europe is an opportunity of a lifetime. A summer abroad experience is eye opening in every way. A summer abroad experience is simply stupendous fun! Hope to see you in Europe! |
