The Society of Bar and Gavel
The Society of Bar and Gavel is the made up of exceptional students who have shown commitment above and beyond what is required of any law student. Holding strong to the traditions of the University of Miami school of Law, the Society of Bar and Gavel is the only honors society specifically dedicated to recognizing law students on campus. Students who have displayed and lived up to the ideals of EXEMPLARY CHARACTER, SERVICE TO OTHERS, POSITIVE ATTITUDE and LEADERSHIP make up our ranks.
Being responsible for starting some of the oldest traditions on campus, the Society of Bar and Gavel is a place for students who are actively engaged and serve as examples for others to follow. Bar & Gavel is credited with bringing about the Barrister (the first school newspaper, the predecessor to the Res Ipsa Loquitor), The Moot Court Board, the Slip Opinion (a weekly newsletter like today's Hearsay), Equity Playhouse, scholarship funds, and interaction with children's homes. This tradition continues with Bar & Gavel's current endeavors, such as Race Judicata (a 5K race for charity), Canes Carnival (an event bringing local youths to the law school for fun and games), Barristers' Ball (the law school's awards banquet) as well an numerous other activities. Being a member of the Society is both an honor and a commitment, as active participation is expected of all members.
The Society of Bar and Gavel is not about self praise, resume padding or elitism! Is is far from all of these things. Members are expected on to continually represent themselves, the organization, and the school with the same HONOR, DIGNITY, and HUMILITY that got them into Bar & Gavel in the first place. Members must carry themselves with the understanding that they are looked upon as marshals of good will and ethics who represent the University and the community at all times.
