Miami Law Women is an organization for students with similar beliefs and goals regarding the advancement of women both in the legal profession and throughout society. We are an organization devoted to community service, networking, and social programming within the law school as well as throughout our community. Miami Law Women is a chapter of the Florida Association of Women Lawyers. MLW members are also members of the larger FAWL network.

There are many benefits to Miami Law Women membership. Miami Law Women's Student Mentoring Program connects 1L students with 2 and 3L mentors. Mentors guide assist students with navigating their first year of law school, job searches, course selection, and more. MLW operates an outline bank for our 1L members, which contains outlines for all of the core first-year courses. Working together with our faculty advisor, Professor Mary Coombs, and other accomplished professors and administrators at the law school, we facilitate and encourage student-faculty interaction beyond the classroom. This year, we are hosting a Potluck dinner at Dean Stearns' home, inviting female faculty and administration to interact with our MLW members.

Networking events are a major part of MLW's success. Miami Law Women's networking opportunities are numerous. Each year MLW organizes two events, but also encourages its members to attend school-wide, and professional, events. Miami Law Women provides its members with the tools for successful networking, from purchasing business cards to learning how to break the ice.

Last year MLW, together with the Black Law Students Association, hosted the First Annual Fundraiser for Miami Law Women in Need sponsored by FAWL, the Law School Activity Fee Allocation Committee, and the Law School Alumni Board. Miami Law Women raised over $4,000 through ticket sales and a silent auction featuring items from Tiffany & Co., Kaplan PMBR, Giorgio Armani Beauty, Body Details, and Jaguar Ceviche Spoon & Latam Grill, among others. Our efforts directly benefitted a UM Law alumna who was diagnosed with cancer and who was struggling to make ends meet. A portion of the funds was donated to the Women's Fund of Miami-Dade County, which provides grants to community initiatives benefitting women and children.

We are also dedicated to serving the community through various service projects. MLW members assist practicing attorneys in their pro bono efforts on behalf of the disenfranchised in the Miami-Dade area. We are also particularly devoted to two organizations: Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Be Bright Pink. Ticket sales from our annual fundraising events, VIPink and Pink & White, are donated to these organizations. Annually, we participate in The Race for the Cure and Light the Night.

Miami Law Women looks forward to a successful 2011-2012 school year and welcomes the Class of 2014.
