Dean's Cup Schedule
We are proud to announce that Team Law wins the 25th Anniversary of the Dean's Cup!! This marks the first time in 11 years that we have won the Cup two consecutive years. Please, for the rest of the year, and all of next, when you pass by the Dean of Students Office, perhaps to meet with Dean V. about your latest weekend 'mishap' which you may need to report to The Florida Bar, pause and take a moment to marvel at the Cup, and remember Dean's Cup 2008.
For more information, contact Dean’s Cup Co-Captains Brett Trembly and Kerry Whalen at keepthecup08@gmail.com.
Thursday April 10th BOWLING SWEEP!! Dean’s Cup got off to a perfect start last night as Team Law swept bowling!! The men's squad was guided by 1L Joseph ‘Kingpin’ Sawka who lead all scorers. The men dominated from start to finish, as the Med School got ‘Munsoned!’ The women's team was lead by 1L Kelly Childers and 3L Jen Stein. The women held on to an early lead and never let go. Way to start off Team Law!!!
Saturday April 12th TEAM LAW WINS COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT!! Thank you to all the members of the Law Community who participated in the Virginia Key cleanup on Saturday. We had more volunteers than the Med School and won the points for the event!! Special thanks to faculty members Dean Lennon and Kevin Probst for participating, as well as students Kevin Roach, Mindy Reinstein, Joy Purcell, Scott Roberts, Preston Clark, Kerry Whalen, Serena Josephs, and Sara Neugroschel.
The first-annual Dean's Cup Kickoff Fundraiser was a huge success as we raised just over $1,500.00 for charity!! Special thanks to 3L David Matz for all his work in coordinating the event, along with 3L event volunteers Rebecca Lada, Joy Purcell, Kevin Roach, and 2L Ryan Florio. Hopefully this becomes an annual event where we can put our Dean's Cup efforts towards helping improve our community.
SOCCER Law school wins again as we took two out of three soccer games!! In the women's match, 3L captain Kylie Wagenet had her team focused to take down the tough med squad, and the women pulled out a 1-0 win on 1L Erin Berry's game-winning goal. Although the defense rarely let the ball get by, 3L Meredith Allen dominated at goalie. In the exciting men's B game, 2L Kenny Case scored the game-winning goal in stoppage time. In the A game, Team Law dictated the tempo and controlled the pace the entire match, but was unable to score in regulation, and lost in a shootout. Comprised of mostly 1L's, this group will no doubt dominate for the next two years.
Sunday April 13th HOT DOG EATING CONTEST
SOFTBALL Team Law swept the softball games yesterday at Tropical Park!!! The women won by mercy rule in 4 innings with an all-around dominant effort. In the co-ed game Team Law got off to an early lead and held on to win comfortably. The thrilling men's game went into extra innings, where 3L Vance Aloupis knocked in two runs with a game-winning triple. Congrats to our 3L captains, Ben Cohen and Geniffer Steane, who guaranteed victory and delivered!! SWIMMING Thanks to 3L's Katie Wenzel and Staci Widlansky for running the Dean's Cup swim meet. Katie took second in the 200 freestyle for the women. The men's team won the medley relay with strong swimming from 2L Brendan Everman, 1L Brandon Thompson, 3L Henrique Geigel and 2L Andy Wilson. Brendan Everman and Brandon Thompson also placed first and second in the 200 freestyle for the men. A great effort by our swimmers against a deep Med squad. GOLF Overall victory for the Law golfers! The men took two out of their three matches thanks to solid play by 3L Andrew Vitale and 2L Brad Jewel in the first match, and 3L Aaron Blumberg and 2L Frederico Mautone in the second. The women's match was won by 3L Kerry Whalen playing solo against two Med School girls!
Monday April 14th MEN'S BENCH PRESS The first ever Dean’s Cup bench press competition was won by 1L Josh Mason!! Josh, weighing only 175 lbs, put up an incredible 335 lbs! 1L Eric Fernandez took 3rd place to seal an overall victory for Team Law.
WOMEN'S LEG PRESS The women's leg press was dominated by a med student who pressed an untouchable 590 lbs. Team Law gave it their all and 1L Ashley Foster just missed 3rd place with her 520 lbs lift.
MEN'S INDOOR SOCCER Men's indoor soccer beat a physical and tough med school team 6-2! 2L captain Joe Bass tallied 3 points, including a 2 point goal (it was that good). 2L Francisco Cieza knocked in 2 goals and 1L Ron Rohde scored 1 to round out the men's 6 goals. Law played tough defense throughout the game and 1L Brian Kelley made some big saves to hold the med school to only 2 goals!
WOMEN'S INDOOR SOCCER Another victory for Law women on the soccer field! Law dominated the med school for a 6-1 victory! Team Law was paced by a 5 goal performance (yes 5!) by 1L Erin Berry! 3L Kylie Wagenet knocked in the final goal to put the game completely out of reach. 3L goalie Meredith Allen made some body sacrificing saves to hold the med school to only 1 goal. Great effort by our girls!
MEN'S FLOOR HOCKEY Probably the toughest game so far in Deans' Cup. Team Law fought hard and was on the losing end of several close calls. Law played 2 men down for almost 5 minutes of the game and still managed to finish regulation in a 2-2 tie thanks to goals by 2L Jamie Henig and 3L Joey Barca. 1L Todd Sussman played outstanding in goalie; the only “goals” scored by the Med school were on a rare and “unique” crease rule where the Med school was awarded a goal, twice, because one of our defenders shoes was allegedly in the crease even though the puck never went in the net. After no goals in the 5 minutes over time, Law lost in a sudden death shoot out.
WOMEN'S FLOOR HOCKEY A thin Law school squad took down a deep Med team 2-0! Lead by 2L captain and goalie Sara Neugroschel, team Law played tough defense and controlled the pace of the game. 2L Claire Zovko and 1L Valerie Prochazka each netted a goal to put Team Law up and they never looked back. Special thanks to 1L Erin Berry and 2L Siobhan McHale for playing last minute and providing Law with their only 2 subs! Awesome job!
Tuesday April 15th TENNIS A few weeks ago, 3L Josh Rubens guaranteed a victory in men's tennis... and I am happy to announce he delivered!! Josh won an epic battle at the #2 singles match in a third set tie-breaker. 1L Jarred Leibner dominated in #3 singles winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Josh and Jarred then teamed up together to win the #1 doubles match and Matt Cherner-Ranst and Jon Waldman won the #2 doubles and complete the men's victory. The women's tennis team was also victorious on the courts! Led by 3L Captain Jordan Davis, Team Law won 2 out of 3 singles and 1 out of 2 doubles. Jordan won the #2 singles match soundly, while 2L Tammy Savin easily won the #3 singles match. The #2 doubles team of 3L Samantha Hamilton and 2L Claire Zovko made quick work of their Med opponents winning 8-4. Congrats to Jordan, Josh and all our tennis players!!
ULTIMATE FRISBEE If you haven't heard of this sport, well, you're not alone. But it is a Dean's Cup event that has traditionally been dominated by the Med School. So, this year we decided to give the Med School a run for their money despite having only one person with any Ultimate experience. But, apparently, to excel at Ultimate Frisbee, you have to attend Med School and look like McLovin or Ugly Betty.
VOLLEYBALL Team Law really laid down the, well, Law yesterday on the volleyball courts, making quick work of the out-matched Med teams. The women were paced by 3L Captain Sarah Alexander, 3L Joanna Doerfel, 1L Allison Flowers, and 2L Jessica Vossekuil. Also making key digs was 3L Genipher Steyne. This caps a three-year volleyball sweep for our beloved Dean's Cup twins Sarah and Joanna. Great job girls. After being demolished by the Law ladies, the packed Med student cheering section tried to rally their men to a victory, but to no avail as 3L Captain Joseph Discepola had his team ready to roll. 1L Miguel De La Rosa set the ball perfectly all over the court as 1L Justin Petrie and 2L Sharif Hannan killed spike after spike. Way to earn another sweep Team Law!!!
RACQUETBALL The brooms came out again for Team Law on the racquetball courts. We swept all three men's matches and won the only female match. Congrats to 3L Captain Jon Hart, 3L Darryl "Candy" Graham, and 1L Steven Dray for their dominating victories. In the only women's match 1L Daniela Gordon lost the first game, then rallied back to win the last two games and steal the match!!!
Wednesday April 16th Team Law had a great night at the Wellness Center!! Many thanks to the Law Alumni and Parents and Partners Associations for providing refreshments and snacks for the competitors! Team Law had a great cheering section all night long lead by 3Ls Jeannipher Schteine and Andrew Vitali, III. We definitely have the better fans!! Special thanks to Deans Angones and Hausler for coming out to show their support!!
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Back to the Abacus balls for the Med women, please leave the basket ballin' to the Law! The women's basketball A-game was an easy victory for Team Law. In what is beginning to sound like a broken record, Dean's Cup 3L gurus Sarah Alexander and Joanna Doerfel delivered again as Law crushed their confused opponents 58-28. Fast break points by 2L Claire Zovko and 1L Erin Berry, as well as all around hustle by 3L Lauren Zerbinopoulos and 1L Audra Thomas kept the game well out of reach. Speedy recovery to miss Doerfel who rolled an ankle on a Med girl's foot. Although we have no proof this suspect foul against one of our Dean's Cup all-stars was intentional, Jo immediately felt better, ironically, after letting said Med girl emphatically know she didn't appreciate the foul. Team Law backs down from no one!!
MEN’S BASKETBALL Preston Clark- a man of action, a man of his word, (insert third poor cliché here)! However you categorize it, Senor Clark delivered as the men's basketball A-team annihilated the Med School 63-21! Sealing the game's fate early with a pair of trifectas, Preston decided to spread the love. In came crowd favorite Chris "Twinkle Toes" Black, who livened things up with a series of penetrate-and-dish drives that had the Med School, and Chris' cheering section, astounded. Kid can really ball. The highlight of the game came with only a few minutes left when 3L Seye Aluko 'faked no funk on his nasty dunk.' Dunking on the helpless scalpel holders and getting ejected, what a perfect way to end a Dean's Cup b-ball career Seye! The Men's B-squad won a hard fought game 41-35, earning Team Law the overall basketball victory! The lead changed several times in this crucial clash, but in the end Law prevailed. Great hustle on both ends of the court by 3L Colin Riley and 2L Eric Tinsman. Early reports from the C-team contest indicate the Med School's alleged sideline mascot 'Roger Rabbit' may have actually been the 'Ether Bunny' used to slow down our squad. Lab results pending, but C-team lost in a close one.
DODGEBALL Led by '3 eL Capitan' Rachel Doernberg, Team Law was no "Average Joe's" on the dodgeball court last night. While the Med women were busy talking and taunting, the Law was busy dodging, ducking, dipping, and diving its way to 7 out of 10 victories in the highly anticipated dodgeball show down.
Men's highlights: In the first match, 1L Tai Phetsanghane was the lone man standing at the end, and caught a bullet thrown by a Med student to end the game and set the tone for the night!! In the men's second match 3L Joe Discepola saved the first game at the end, allowing fellow 3L's Darryl "Teddy" Graham and Seye "The Cannon" Aluko to seal the deal in the second game. After losing the first game of the third match, the Law's third team came back and won games 2 and 3 for an exhilarating win! 3Ls Andrew Vitali and Jon Weiss came through in the clutch with big catches and throws. The men's 5th game was a sweep by Team Law with big throws from 3L Drew Smith and a game-winning catch from 2L Brian Costa.
Women's highlights: The first women's game was swept by Team Law! Led by 3Ls Meredith Allen and Lauren Zerbinopoulos Law was too hot to handle. The second women's game was also a sweep for Team Law. 3L's Rachel Doernberg, Sarah Alexander and Kerry Whalen made quick work of their Med opponents. Kerry caught 4 balls in the first game and Rachel caught 3 in the second to put the match away!
Co-ed highlights: In the final match, Team Law put the emphatic stamp on another dominating night. After getting challenged and mocked by a Med School girl, Andrew "No Mercy" Vitali, III and an unnamed co-chair simultaneously chucked two dodgeballs at the last Med female standing. Trying to avoid the barrage, this brave soul left her feet... and ended up flat on her face!! She took one in the gut and the second one swept out her feet. Assumption of risk at its finest!! An appropriate ending to a dominating performance by Team Law.
Best dressed awards given for the third year in a row to Rachel Doernberg, and for the first time to Sal "Risky Business" Cheema, who did his best Tom Cruise impression to distract the Med women by sliding around the dodgeball court in his daisy dukes and aviators.
Thursday April 17th
THE STRUGGLE AT STORMSURGE (CAFE) The 'Dark Side' made a significant move last night in table tennis, winning all 5 matches for their first sweep in '08. The energized paratroopers seemed ready to mark Thursday as the start of their Dean's Cup renaissance. Following table tennis, the Darth Vapors stormed into Stormsurge with their own foosball table, seemingly poised to intimidate our players. Now, at this point I know what you're thinking- if you bring your own foose table, you better win. Call it karma, call it kismet, call it Jedi mind tricks, but what happened next typifies our '07-'08 student body. 3L's Jon Hart, Jon Weiss, and Ramon Trujillo rallied together and won one for the good side! In the first singles match, a focused Jon Hart easily derailed what we thought was the Med's top player. Jon Weiss put up a great fight in the next singles match, but without any warm up time, waited to rally too long and came up just short. With the score tied, Ramon and Jon Weiss stepped up to the doubles plate. Jon and Ramon lost the first game of the match, in what looked like the Med School had saved their ringers for the doubles contest. Not to be deterred, Jon and Ramon changed strategies, re-focused, and came back to win the next two games to win the match!! One could only smile as the dejected Med crowd sadly gathered up their table and went home.
BATTLE AT THE BEACH (VOLLEYBALL) The Med School stormed the Pearson beach last night and scored an early upset in the men's beach volleyball match. 3L Captain Joseph Discepola was left virtually speechless, responding only with "wait till football." One lucky strike was all the Med School would get though, as waiting in the second game was the ubiquitous Josarah Doerfexander. Doing their best Princess Leah in a bikini impression, the two headed Dean's Cup monster once again hailed victorious, earning Team Law a key victory and not allowing the Dark Side to gain any more ground.
WARFARE IN THE WATER (POLO) The Dark Side swaggered out onto the UC Pool area last night, and for a good reason. Water polo has traditionally been dominated by the Med School, as Team Law has in the past struggled to even find players. This year, 1L Peter Silva sought out the Dean's Cup Committee and asked to be water polo captain. We excitedly agreed! Pete's can-do attitude was infectious on his team, and it was evident from the opening moment this year Team Law would not be denied!! Brenden Everman paced Team Law with 8 goals!! 3L Katie Wenzel played great defense on the Med's best male player, and 1L Tate Holt earned chants of "M-V-P" from the crown with his dominating performance in the goal. Highlight of the game came when Tate stopped a ball, picked it up, and threw it across the pool and right past their goalie for a goal!! Everyone played their hearts out, and the crowd really enjoyed this Team victory. All the players deserve our congratulations: 1L's captain Peter Silva, Brandon Thompson, MVP Tate Holt, Ann McSpadden, and Katherine Reilly; 2L's Brendan Everman, Claire Zokvo, and Jesse Vossekuil; and 3L's Jon Weiss, Katie Wenzel, Meredith Allen, and Henrique Geigel.
GENERAL CHU On a side note- this marked the second straight year 3L Stella Chu agreed to captain table tennis. Each year Stella held tryouts and made sure her team was ready to play. And, for the second straight year, Stella stepped aside and allowed others to compete in her place, despite being a very talented player. Although we were defeated, Stella's selfless leadership exemplifies what Dean's Cup is all about: the Team. Don’t let Stella’s diminutive stature hide her huge heart!! Thank you Stella Chu you are an example for us all.
Friday April 18th FOOTBALL The men swept and the ladies split their games Friday evening, sealing the overall Dean's Cup victory for Team Law!! With 6 games total on the night, it would be hard to mention everyone and do it right, (I'm starting to rhyme and I like it), so I will be brief and apologize for not mentioning everyone who contributed. The men's D game had the most exciting ending of all the games, with our team pitching and juking their way down the entire field to score the winning touchdown as time expired. This amazing feat just happened to be caught on video, edited, and posted on youtube. Watch with volume: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mydkwepYSnc The men's C and B teams both won by a touchdown, although the games weren't really as close as the final score indicates. In the finale, former Division II QB Tate Bennett came out of retirement to quarterback the A team. The Law School dominated the entire game, holding the Med squad to a total of 5 completed passes. However, one of those happened to come on a lucky deep ball with a minute left, which was caught for a touchdown, sending the game into overtime. On fourth down in OT, Tate hit Christopher "Soft Hands" Meyer for the game winning score. An exciting end to a three-year sweep in Dean's Cup for the 3L’s. In the women's B game, 2L Rochelle Willis dominated play scoring 2 TDs and helped her team easily get past the Med squad.
TUG-O-WAR With a 2000 pound weight limit, Team Law put as many small bodies on the rope as possible, a tactical move which paid off. With 12 men on the rope totaling 1998 lbs., the Law squad easily out pulled the Med team, who decided to put their biggest guys on the rope, and therefore only had 10. Thanks to 1L Dimitri De Silva who stepped out of the gym just long enough to help the men win. Good thing court rooms have rules against violence, this kid is jacked.
Saturday April 19th 5K
3L Rachel Drude won the women's 5K Saturday morning with an amazing time of just over 20 minutes!! Fellow 3L Gus Perez was the only Law finisher in the top 6 for the men, placing second. Also placing for the women were in second place 3L Anna Mance, in fourth place 1L Ann McSpadden, and in fifth and sixth places, respectively, 1L Katherine Reilly and 2L Sophie Melniker.
A huge thanks to Dean Stearns, professor Alfieri and his kids, Dean Raquel Matas, Dean Georgina Angones, Budget Director Nimia Dinmore, Director of International and Foreign Programs Jessica Carvalho Morris and Billie Jo Day from the same office, Gloria Garcia from the Dean of Students office, Director of Student Recruiting Therese Lambert, Kevin Probst from HOPE, Betty Vilaboy from the Litigation Skills Office, and alumnae Carla Tamayo who all came out on Saturday morning to either run or walk in the 5K and earn participation points for Team Law. Thanks also to Detra Davis for showing up to serve the breakfast and staying to cheer all day long!!
KICKBALL/NEGOTIATION COMPETITION Apparently Chris Meyer's WAKA squad requires pre-game libations in order to kick a big, red, round ball slowly rolling at them, as they lost the first kickball game on Saturday. Gen Steam's motivational attempts weren't enough as Team Law fell just short. At the end of the second game, an impromptu 20-minute negotiation competition broke out after a controversial play by the Med School. Team Law put its ADR skills to use and settled on a sudden-death extra inning, where we thankfully scored three more runs and won the contest.
TRACK AND FIELD 3L Captain Joe Discepola and 1L Brian Kelley dominated the track meet for the men, winning all 5 events. Joe placed first in the 100 and 200 meter sprints and won the long jump, and Brian came in first in the 1600 and 800 meter races. 3L Scott Mattia placed third in the 100 and second in the long jump. Inch for inch I think Scott's long jump distance should beat Joe's, but that's neither here nor there. Thanks to "Scottie" for all his help and support this week as he came to almost every single event! Placing third in the long jump was 1L Jeff Fraser whose lone goal was to be mentioned in this email. Well, here you are Jeff, and I even attached your pic from the meet.
Also earning points was 3L Gus "Goose" Perez who placed third in the mile. Special note on Gus- I asked Gus to train for the 5K and track meet over a year ago and he agreed. When I informed Gus there was only one meet and no geriatric division, he thankfully stayed on board! Gus has been running track meets for over 25 years, and, at 37, his performance against competitors 10 years his younger was inspiring to us all. Coming in second in the 5K and third in the mile the same day is an impressive feat regardless of age. Congrats Gus, and thank you for your efforts to Team Law.
In the women's meet, 1L Ashley Foster won the 100 meter dash, and 3L Joycelyn Brown placed second. Joycelyn decided not to run the 200 meter dash, and even though I wasn't pleased, omelet it go Joyce!! The Law women also had all three long jump winners, in order from first to third, 1L Akivia Bassaragh, 1L Ashley Foster, and 2L Siobhan McHale. Siobhan also won the 200 meter sprint, giving her two top-three finishes in her first-ever track meet!!
BAR GAMES 3L billiards captain Chris "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere" Black employed his usual strategy once again this year for Team Law- that is, apparently, lose at all costs. Chris' abysmal 2 year record as billiards captain may never be topped!! I am assured though the billiards team had fun. Team Law fared better in darts, winning 3 of 5 matches. Names were not available at print time, but thanks to 2L captain Mike "Speak Now Think Later" Marshall for leading Law to the win. Team Law did not win poker, but we placed 3rd, 4th and 5th earning valuable points for Team Law. Thanks to JD/MBA (2.5L) Tommy Wang for captaining the team for the second straight year. Poker is one of the most difficult events to run, as there are inevitable controversies every year, but Tommy has done a remarkable job. An even bigger thanks to the "Asian Sensation" for leaving Hooligan's before his scheduled "You Look Wonderful Tonight" karaoke performance.
A FEW FINAL WORDS FROM YOUR 2008 CO-CHAIRS, IF WE MAY
When we were appointed Dean's Cup Chairs by Preston Clark and Tommy Wang last spring, we decided it was time to spice Dean's Cup up a bit. Dean's Cup should be a team effort from the entire Law Community, not just a few sporting events for our athletic students. The goal was threefold: to make Dean's Cup more inclusive of every student and the faculty and administration; to make the week more fun; and to keep the cup!! To the first two ends, I believe we were successful. Whether it was raising over $1,500.00 for charity, cleaning Virginia Key Beach, adding new events such as the hot dog eating contest, tug-o-war, and the bench press competition, restructuring the event schedule so we could begin with a kick-off party and end with a victory celebration, or simply increasing communication hoping to keep everyone informed, we strived to achieve those goals the best way we knew how. To the third end, well, the proof is in the pudding.
Even though surely no one is still reading at this point, we would be remiss if we did not thank a few people who helped along the way:
Dean Stearns- Dean of Students Janet Stearns has been unbelievably supportive throughout. Not only verbally, but in helping set up all the hydration stations at events, encouraging the alumni and faculty to get involved, and showing up to many event herself. It is great to know that the Team Law is truly a team.
The UM Law Alumni Association & the UM Parents and Partners for providing refreshments, food, and support at many events all week long.
Dean's Cup Committee Members- Chris Meyer, Sarah Alexander, and Sarah Neugroschel for their hard work. The 5K is one of the most time consuming events to organize, and Chris did it all; Staci Widlansky, Lindsey Savastano, Stephanie Davis, and a few more who I'm missing who came to almost every event to cheer and take pictures; 1L section liaisons Raul Tano, Matt Givens, Valerie Prochovska, Patrick Hoffman, and Hilary Bricken for helping promote and keeping the 1L's up to speed; and many others who we're regrettably leaving out.
The MVP's- our 1L class was amazing this year, so we decided to create the 1L MVP award. Winners were Brian Kelley and Erin Berry. These two absolutely dominated Dean's Cup, and could make a good argument for overall MVP. However, overall Dean's Cup MVP winners were 2.5L Joe Discepola for the men and 3L Co-MVP's Joanna Doerfel and Meredith Allen for the females. Each of these individuals lead Team Law on and off the field, and we would not have kept the Cup without them.
The Captains of all the individual sports- The strength of Team Law lies in the captains who organize practices, set up their teams, keep their players informed, learn the rules, motivate their team, and lead the way. Our captains this year were outstanding, and the Cup stays home because of their passion and dedication. Our 3L class refused to lose, as is evident by the many guaranteed victories along the way which were delivered. If we remain organized like we have been the past two years, and the 2 and 3L's are enthusiastic and encourage the 1L's to contribute like we did this year, we should never relinquish the Cup. And that is the aim to which Kerry and I hope to leave you- to keep the Cup where it belongs.
Lastly, thanks to you, the Law Community. Thanks to anyone and everyone who participated, cheered, and/or aided in our victory. While many of our classmates have contributed to this Law School in more meaningful ways, Dean's Cup is the one event for which the entire school can truly unite, and we are thankful to have been a small part of such a great week.
Finally, remember, we may have won this year, but the overall score over the 25 years of Dean's Cup is Med 15, Law 10, so we have a long way to go. If that isn't enough motivation to three-peat next year, I leave you win this: http://vimeo.com/907735
