Will Gilmore: President of the Moot Court Board
Whether it's in the courtroom or in memorandum, civil or criminal law, third-year law student Will Gilmore loves constructing and presenting arguments and his ability to do so has served him well in law school. In addition to first place finishes in the 1L Moot Court Competition and the Advanced Moot Court Appellate Brief Competition, Will is the recipient of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Trial Scholarship and was elected President of the Moot Court Board for the 2004-05 academic year. As president, one of Will's proposals is to have UM Law's intra-school competitions sponsored by local law firms and legal organizations and to generate some press coverage of these events.
In addition to his responsibilities with the Moot Court Board, Will has taken on the task of reestablishing the Order of Barristers at UM. While UM is a chartered member of the National Order of Barristers, several years have passed since the school inducted new members. Will is working with the administration at the School of Law to create application procedures, set up a selection committee, and to notify current students about the existence of the Order.
Will is also an editor for the School of Law's International and Comparative Law Review and he recently issued a call for papers for the Law Review's upcoming issue, entitled "Nations in Transition: Promises and Perils of Global Democratization".
This past summer, Will was a clerk with the Federal Public Defender's Office in Miami where he performed legal research, wrote briefs and other memoranda, and attended court proceedings.
Will originally hails from Raleigh, North Carolina, but he has lived all over the southern United States. He holds a B.A. in philosophy and a B.S. in business management from North Carolina State University. Before moving to Miami with his wife in 2002, Will worked for a year as a financial consultant for Prudential Securities.
