October 2004

This past summer, the School of Law added a third option to its summer study abroad programs. The Mediterranean Experience is a 7 ½ week program that travels through Greece, Italy, and Spain. Of the 217 students who participated in the School of Law's summer abroad programs, 86 of them opted for the Mediterranean Experience (the other two programs are in London and Spain) and approximately two-thirds of those students were from other law schools. Scott Janowitz, a second-year student at the University of Miami School of Law was one of the program's first participants. "I thought the program was a great combination of stimulating coursework, experiencing new cultures, and meeting law students from around the country."

Scott completed his undergraduate studies at Carnegie Mellon University in 1999 with a bachelor's in economics and minors in business administration and information & decision systems. Before starting law school in August 2003, he worked for DiamondCluster International in Chicago for three years as a computer analyst.

Scott received six credit hours for taking three courses in the study abroad program. The first course, which is required for all students and taught during the first half of the summer when the program is traveling through Greece and Italy, is Comparative Constitutional Law, taught by UM Law's Professor Gudridge. After completing Gudridge's course, students had a 10-day hiatus from class before they had to report to Barcelona to resume their coursework. Scott and some of his friends used the intersession break to travel to Pamplona, Spain to run with the bulls.

In Barcelona, the Mediterranean Experience merges with the Spain summer program at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra where students spend the remainder of the summer taking two elective courses focusing on contemporary international and comparative legal topics.

Starting next summer, the School of Law's three summer programs will be set up as integrated modules, offering students the option of spending the first half of the summer with one program and then moving to another program site for the second summer session. For instance, students participating in the Mediterranean Experience will have the option of attending the London program for the second half of the summer instead of Barcelona.

Back in Miami for the fall semester, Scott recently started clerking for Wagenfeld Levine, an insurance defense firm located close to campus. Scott is an ambassador for the Admissions & Recruiting Office and a student mentor for new students. During his first-year, Scott was the treasurer for the Cardozo Society, a member of the Federalist Society, and he was active in the Student Bar Association.
