2006 NALSC Freedom Fellowship

April 2006

The National Association of Legal Search Consultants has chosen to award the “NALSC Freedom Fellowship” to UM Student Nancy Millar this year. Nancy will be interning at the Caribbean regional headquarters of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) in Barbados this summer. She will be working mainly on AIDS/HIV programs for women and girls, and access issues for women seeking justice through the Caribbean court systems, primarily in the area of family law.

UNIFEM is the women's fund at the United Nations. It provides financial and technical assistance to innovative program and strategies that promote women's human rights, political participation and economic security. They work in partnership with UN organizations, governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and networks to achieve social justice and gender equality.  The Caribbean office serves the need of women and women's organizations in 26 territories, which is to create an awareness of gender issues in the region among UN agencies, government, NGOs and the private sector.

Nancy’s past dedication to women’s issues is extraordinary.  She spent many years working with NOW (National Organization for Women) in New York in a variety of capacities.  We applaud Nancy’s commitment to the public interest and feminist issues and wish her much success in her summer endeavors.
