Joe Mamounas: Named Editor–in-Chief of University of Miami Law Review

June 2006

Third-year law student Joe Mamounas has been elected Editor-in-Chief of The University of Miami Law Review, the principal scholarly legal journal for UM. “The Law Review features articles that are of legal interest to scholars and practitioners alike,” said Mamounas. Directly responsible for all Law Review affairs, Joe serves as both chief editor and Law Review manager. “My responsibilities range from article selection to overseeing the budget to coordinating alumni events,” said Mamounas.

The editorial staff of the Law Review is made up of UM law students who are selected because of their academic success and skills. Primarily, the staff collaborates to edit and cite-check each piece until it is ready for publication. This process includes three intensive editing stages until the article reaches the Editor-in-Chief’s desk. The Law Review is published four times a year (October, January, April and July).

In addition to serving as the primary legal journal on campus, the Law Review also presents an annual symposium. “The symposium addresses legal topics of interest to law students, legal professionals, and the community,” said Mamounas. This past spring the Law Review’s symposium featured the Theresa Marie Schiavo case and the legal and ethical issues surrounding it.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Joe graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Sociology from Cornell University. He also studied biology and chemistry extensively. While at Cornell, Joe was an Assistant Editor of the Cornell Review. He was also involved in the Cornell Entrepreneur Organization, Phi Kappa Tau (a Greek fraternity), Alpha Kappa Delta (the International Sociology Honors Society), the Hellenic Students Association, and participated in intramurals. As a senior, he completed his honors thesis entitled A Sociological and Legal Inquiry into the Past, Present, and Future of Mail-Order Brides in the United States.

Joe’s accomplishments and involvement continued when he entered UM’s School of Law. As a 1L, Joe was awarded a Florida Bar Foundation Fellowship, which allowed him to study children and youth law. As a 2L, Joe served as an intern in the School of Law’s Children and Youth Law Clinic. Currently, Joe is enjoying his position as a summer associate at Jackson Lewis LLP in Miami.

Joe chose UM School of Law because of its faculty, university community, and recommendations from other Cornell alumni. “I enjoy the camaraderie and friendliness of UM’s student body; the students are open and collaborative.” Academically, Joe has enjoyed Comparative Law, Constitutional Law, Evidence, Torts, and his participation in the Children & Youth Law Clinic. Ultimately, Joe would like to practice international transactional law.
