January 2006

Second-year law student, David Tilden, spent the past summer in Jakarta working for Bank Indonesia, the country’s central bank where he researched U.S. and international banking regulations to be used in proposals for the restructuring of Indonesia’s banking system. “When I was looking for a summer internship, I also interviewed with Indonesia’s primary telecommunications company, but opted to work for the central bank because the country has been undergoing a legal overhaul of its financial system as a result of the Southeast Asian banking crisis. This internship offered me a unique opportunity to be involved in the legal restructuring of a financial system that is vastly different from the U.S. system.”

David spent most of his childhood in Indonesia where his father is a physician. When he was stateside, David grew up in the Midwest, specifically Michigan and Minnesota. He attended Cornell College in Iowa for two years before transferring to the University of Minnesota in Duluth where he graduated cum laude with a dual degree in history and political science in 2004. The summer prior to starting law school, David and his fiancée backpacked from Amsterdam to eastern Turkey.

David is a dean’s fellow for the Academic Achievement Program, a mentor for new students, an ambassador for the Office of Student Recruiting, and a volunteer in H.O.P.E. (Helping Others through Pro Bono Efforts). As a member of the University of Miami Law Review, David is currently writing an article on the implications of a recent decision by a Federal appeals court on MP3 Players.

In addition to fluency in Indonesian, David speaks some Spanish, Greek, and Latin. A voracious reader, in addition to his assigned readings for his law courses, David dedicates about two hours a night to recreational reading, mostly in the areas of history and fiction. He also enjoys writing poetry and scuba diving. Except for the ultra-humid summers, David enjoys Miami and intends to remain in South Florida after completing his law degree in May 2007.
