Alexandra Parra: Accepts Offer from Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York
Following her summer associate position, Alex Parra was offered an associate attorney position with Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York. The large multinational law firm has also agreed to postpone her start date until 2007 to allow Alex two years for a judicial clerkship with U.S. District Court Judge Kenneth A. Marra in Fort Lauderdale, the same judge she interned for during her first summer of law school.
Having the rest of the decade mapped out for her is unfamiliar territory for Alex. The daughter of a Uruguayan mother and Argentinean father, Alex was born and grew up in Washington, D.C. until age seven when the family relocated to Miami where she lived until starting college at Dartmouth. During college, she studied abroad at the Université Le Mirail in Toulouse, France and she spent a semester conducting field research on the coastal ecosystems in Baja California Sur in México. After graduating with a dual degree in romance languages and environmental biology in 1995, Alex spent a year rock climbing. She drove cross-country from Hanover to San Francisco, rock climbing along the way. When she arrived in San Francisco she found a job in a climbing gym. After a year in San Francisco, she moved back to New England and spent the next five years leading groups of high school students throughout Latin America, Western Europe, Australia, India, Nepal, and Tibet on alternative learning programs for Putney Student Travel. Fluent in Spanish and proficient in French, Alex also spent a year in New York working as a language teacher for pre-kindergarten to second grade students before returning to Miami to start law school in 2002.
At Miami Law, Alex has made the Dean's List every semester. She is on the University of Miami Law Review and is a fellow for the Center for Ethics and Public Service's Community Health Rights Education Group. She was a winner of the First Year Moot Court Competition and was the Best Oral Advocate for the Advanced Moot Court Competition and served on the Moot Court Board during her second year. Her favorite courses were Civil Procedure and Litigation Skills. With her rock climbing options limited by the geography of South Florida, Alex spends her free time running, playing tennis, and catching up with friends.
