Academic Oversight Course Selection

Students with a GPA below 2.5—either cumulatively or in the most recent semester—are automatically placed on Academic Oversight. Students on Academic Oversight are in good academic standing. The purpose of Academic Oversight is to help students achieve their maximum academic potential. A student on Academic Oversight will be assigned an "Academic Advisor," either the Director or the Associate Director of the Academic Achievement Program (AAP). The AAP at Miami Law has been especially created to provide resources to students seeking to improve their academic performance. Academic Advisors have extensive experience helping students meet the challenge of maintaining their GPA above the 2.5 level.

The AAP sponsors numerous programs and workshops, which are open to all students. Students on Academic Oversight are expected to fully participate in this programming, and take advantage of all the resources sponsored by the AAP. If you are on Oversight, your Advisor will provide details about such programs. Note also that if your GPA is below 2.3, special conditions may apply. Academic Oversight is not the same as Academic Probation. If you are on Academic Probation, the information on this page is not applicable. Please consult with your Academic Advisor regarding course registration.

Registration Procedures for Students on Academic Oversight

• Course Selection: Below, you will find specific guidelines regarding Academic Oversight course registration (List A and List B). So long as your course selections satisfy these guidelines, you may enroll in the courses of your choice via CaneLink, without prior approval from your Advisor. However, if your course selections do not meet these criteria, you may be administratively dropped from certain courses and added to other courses deemed more appropriate.
• Registration Dates and Times: If you are on Academic Oversight, the registrar will assign you a registration date and time pursuant to normal procedures, based upon your class year and other standard policies. However, you will have a limited “open registration” period, to choose classes (including adding or dropping), and to place yourself on waitlists. When the open registration period ends, an administrative hold will be placed on your CaneLink account. Your Advisor will provide more information about this process, including the exact dates of the open registration period.
• Adding and Dropping Courses: During the open registration period, you may add or drop courses via CaneLink, as long as your overall schedule remains compliant with the registration guidelines listed below. If you wish to add or drop a course after the open registration period, you must complete the following form, which is subject to approval by your Advisor: Academic Oversight Add/Drop Form.
• Waitlists: You may add and remove yourself from waitlists during the open registration period. If a seat becomes available during the open registration period, you will automatically be added to that class (including any designated course swaps). However, once the open registration period ends, you may no longer add or remove yourself from waitlists, and you will not be eligible to enter classes from waitlists. Please use every effort to ensure that you are satisfied with your schedule by the end of open registration, without requiring a waitlisted seat.
• Difficulty Obtaining a Seat: If you are unable to comply with the Academic Oversight Registration guidelines listed below, because no seats are available in your desired course, or you are on a waitlist after the open registration period ends, please contact your Academic Advisor.
• Graduation Requirements: Please remember that, in order to graduate, all students must fulfill the general graduation requirements for JDs – see the Student Handbook for details. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are on track to fulfill these requirements before graduation.
• Joint Degree Students: If you are a joint degree student on Academic Oversight, please consult with your Academic Advisor and the advisor of your joint degree program before course enrollment.
