May, 2009

Dear Students,

Welcome to the University of Miami School of Law!  My name is Matthew Givens, President of the Student Bar Association (SBA), your student elected governing body for 2009-2010.  On behalf of our students, I congratulate you on being admitted and look forward to meeting you.

We are very excited to have you as a member of our law school community.  You will find that your first year of law school is an intense and rewarding experience that requires lots of hard work.  The good news is that at the University of Miami, you are never alone—your fellow students and faculty members are always available to help you through the process.  Law school is a unique challenge—and the first year in particular can be difficult.  There are programs in place to help you acclimate to life at UM Law.  In addition, the SBA, the Academic Achievement Program, your Orientation Members and the over thirty other student organizations are here to assist you with whatever you need.  We also strongly encourage you to partake in the wide variety of extracurricular opportunities our campus offers, like guest lecturers, volunteer work and intramural sports.  The more well-rounded your experience is outside the daily rigor of law school, the more enjoyable your time will be here at UM.

When you arrive in August, there will be an SBA-sponsored Orientation which will offer you the opportunity to meet your classmates, learn about campus resources and student organizations, participate in social and service events, and receive valuable information on how to manage your first year in law school.

Finally, please keep in mind that the people you meet during your time at the University of Miami School of Law, in addition to being lifelong friends, will eventually become your professional colleagues.  If you take the time to get to know them, you will have a great year and a great start to your legal career.  It is true that your reputation as a lawyer begins with your first day of law school.

Congratulations and again, welcome to our community.  Go Canes!

Sincerely,
Christopher Malek

Recommended Attire
There is no dress code for Orientation. Comfortable shoes are strongly suggested because you will be doing a lot of walking. It likely will be hot outside and cool in the air conditioned rooms, so dress appropriately for the heat and a jacket or sweater for indoors.

Some students wear shorts, jeans, skirts or summer dress. Miami is typically casual though you want to remember that you are entering a professional school rather than heading to the beach.

The Dean's Dinner at the Biltmore Hotel is dressier - cocktail attire.
