Hello! My name is Allison Freidin and I am very excited to be one of your Orientation Co-Chairs. I really look forward to making your transition to law school as easy and "painless" as possible. I am from Miami and also went to UM as an undergrad, so I hope to be able to provide you with answers to any questions you might have about the school or the city in general. We have great pre-orientation events planned for those of you who will be in the Miami area before school, and a GREAT orientation schedule for all 1Ls, beginning August 11. I look forward to meeting all of you, and please do not hesitate to email me with any questions you may have at a.freidin@umiami.edu.

Welcome to law school!  I'm Emily Goodman and I will be one of your Co-Chairs during Orientation 2009.  I helped with orientation last year and even in undergrad.  You are about to begin a very tough and exciting journey and we want to help you by making this year's orientation the best ever.  Although my Co-Chair, Allison, and I will be busy overseeing all the activities in store for you, please do not hesitate to ask me any questions.  I love to help people and I think you will find that I am very friendly.  I know what you are going through right now and I am here to help!  An easy way to get in contact with me is through the UM Law School Orientation 2009 group on Facebook.  Good luck in the upcoming months and I can't wait to see you all very soon.

Congratulations on taking your first step into the legal world! By now you’ve likely started mentally counting down to your first day as a 1L. Take solace in the fact that our Orientation Committee is here to guide you through the process. In the coming months I’ll be working together with the Committee to set up particularly inclusive campus tours. Having grown up in Miami and having received a B.A. in Political Science and Sociology from UM means that I know just how wonderful our community and campus can be.  Throughout my time as a law student I’ve worked as a Dean’s Fellow for the Academic Achievement Program and will be serving as Executive Editor for the University of Miami Law Review this coming year, so please feel free to contact me with any questions.  Best of luck!

As co-chair of the pre-orientation committee, I will be organizing events throughout the summer to allow you to get to meet other new students and also some of our current 2L and 3L students. As a native of South Florida, I hope to introduce you to many different venues throughout the area. We hope to welcome you and to allow you to ask us questions in an informal setting. We will be posting our pre-orientation calendar of events by the beginning of June and holding events from mid-June through the first day of orientation. I look forward to meeting you soon.

Hello! And Welcome to Miami.  My name is Valerie Cole and I am a rising 3L.  I graduated in 2005 from the University of Nebraska and spent two years in Los Angeles prior to coming to Miami for Law School.  I chose Miami because of the variety of Summer Abroad options and the Litigation Skills program, both of which exceeded my expectations.
I am in charge of coordinating the always enjoyable Dine-Around Dinner.  It just happens to coincide with Miami Spice and is a great way to experience some of Miami’s best restaurants at special savings or discover some of Miami’s best keep secrets. This event is a great opportunity to get to know your fellow 1L’s in a relaxed and mellow atmosphere. It’s also a great opportunity to pick the brain of an upper classman on their 1L experience and any tips, tricks, or advice they may have for ‘surviving’ your 1L year.  For me the Dine-Around Dinner was where I met some of my closest friends and Andy the 2L who was there provided me with some great tips on 1L classes.  During Orientation, there will be a website to sign up for specific restaurants, but if you have any other question about this event or law school in general feel free to email me at val.l.cole@gmail.com.  See you on the Bricks!!

Hi! Welcome to the University of Miami School of Law! We have planned fun and exciting pre-orientation events that will give you the invaluable opportunity to meet other incoming students before the first day of school. Meeting new people is a great part of the law school experience and making new friends before the start of school makes this transition a lot easier. As a Miami native, I am available to answer any and all of your questions. It is always nice to see a familiar face, so look for me at the pre-orientation events and in the hallways on campus. See you there!

Recommended Attire
There is no dress code for Orientation. Comfortable shoes are strongly suggested because you will be doing a lot of walking. It likely will be hot outside and cool in the air conditioned rooms, so dress appropriately for the heat and a jacket or sweater for indoors.

Some students wear shorts, jeans, skirts or summer dress. Miami is typically casual though you want to remember that you are entering a professional school rather than heading to the beach.

The Dean's Dinner at the Biltmore Hotel is dressier - cocktail attire.
