The University of Miami School of Law Charles C. Papy Jr. Moot Court Board competed in the 12th Annual National Juvenile Law Moot Court Competition, held in Costa Mesa, CA.  The teams consisted of second year students Rachel Dubin, Berit Griffin and Andrew Wilson and third year student Fred Sheffield.

Both UM teams competed with distinction, with Dubin and Sheffield’s team finishing in the quarter finals.  Rachel Dubin won the coveted award for Best Oral Advocate, given to the competitor with the highest scores oral advocacy scores from the preliminary rounds of the competition.

The competition, which is sponsored by Whittier Law School, was held in Costa Mesa, California February 9-10, 2008.  Over the past decade, participants have tackled controversial questions relating to child abuse, paternity, siblings rights, in vitro fertilization, and the institutionalization of minors.  This year's problem presented a constitutional issue involving free speech and censorship where high school students created a controversial website for their high school class. The principal of the high school suspended the students when they refused to shut down the entire site. The event remains the only national moot court competition dedicated exclusively to issues confronting families and children.

This is the first year that the University of Miami School of Law’s Moot Court Board has participated in the Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition. For more information on the Charles C. Papy Moot Court Board, please visit: http://www.law.miami.edu/studentorg/mcb.php
