The Department of International Studies & the Joint Program on Law, Public Policy & Ethics of the University of Miami School of Law and College of Arts & Sciences and the Center for Ethics & Public Service, together with the ACLU of Florida and many other community groups are co-sponsoring: "A Conversation with U.S. Congressman John Conyers, Jr." on Sunday, November 4th, 2007, from 4:00pm - 6:00pm. Conyers will discuss important and timely issues such as unlawful detention and immigration practices, use of torture, wiretapping and presidential signing statements. Rep. Conyers, in his 21st term as a U.S. Congressman, is the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and the second most senior member in the U.S. House. The House Judiciary Committee oversees the Department of Justice (including the FBI), the Federal Courts, constitutional and civil rights issues as well as others. He is also the Dean and a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, which was formed in 1969 to address the concerns of Black and minority citizens.
