Miami Law Alumna Confirmed by Senate to Federal Bench

(Posted: 06-26-12) Robin S. Rosenbaum, a Miami Law alumna and adjunct faculty member, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate Tuesday as a federal judge for the Southern District of Florida. The vote was 92 to 3.

(Posted: 06-25-12) Milana V. Kuznetsova, J.D. '11, is a brilliant example of an innovator who has taken a creative path to carve out her own future in a challenging job market. The hard charging, energetic, and, yes, perky self-starter saw an unfilled niche and threw herself into the crack. Today, Kuznetsova is the CEO of ESENEM, LLC, "a company geared to support entrepreneurship, mobile technology, and development of law practice optimization (LPO)," as described by the company's own social media sites.

Alumnus Helps Recent Graduate Land Job in Chicago

(Posted: 06-25-12) In another recent example of alumni helping alumni, Kurt Newsom, JD '04, assisted in the placement of one of Miami Law's graduates, Ben McCulloch, JD '11, at an investment firm just outside of Chicago. McCulloch, a former HOPE Fellow, recently began working as Associate Counsel at First Trust Portfolios. Newsom is currently the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Geneva Investment Management of Chicago, LLC.

Miami Law HOPE Fellow and Recent Graduate Helped Draft Florida Safe Harbor Act

(Posted: 06-25-12) Miami Law alumnus, Thomas Oglesby, JD '11 and former HOPE (Helping Others Through Pro Bono Efforts) Fellow, was part of the team of exceptional attorneys, law enforcement officers, mental health and health care professionals who delivered the Florida Safe Harbor Act to Governor Rick Scott. The Act provides for children who have been victims of commercial sexual exploitation.

International Moot Court Team Musters Moot Madrid: Miami Law Students Advance in Competition

(Posted: 06-25-12) Four students from Miami Law's International Moot Court team advanced to the semifinals, and one student was awarded best oralist, at the fourth annual Moot Madrid competition. From May 28 to June 1, second-year students Jessica Marroquin, Estefania Nasielski, Carlos Nunez and LL.M. Yosef Shwedel participated in the oral phase of the international commercial arbitration in Spain. Nasielski was awarded best oralist.

PREP Students Explore Attorney Confidentiality with Dade Legal Aid Attorneys

(Posted: 06-18-12) Students from Miami Law's Professional Responsibility and Ethics Program (PREP), Matthew Friendly, Kamal Sleiman, and Garrett Lorentz, recently presented an interactive ethics CLE program at Dade Legal Aid. Under the supervision of Jan L. Jacobowitz, PREP's Director, the students created a lively hypothetical format, which focused on ethical issues pertaining to disclosure of confidential information and the use of social media.

Miami Law Alumna Opens Art Show in New York

Leading South Florida Trial Attorney Endows Scholarship at Miami Law

(Posted: 06-18-12) Tod Aronovitz, JD'74, Past President of the Law Alumni Association, and former President of The Florida Bar, has made a significant contribution to create The Honorable Sidney M. Aronovitz Scholarship Fund, in honor of his late father. The scholarship, at the University of Miami School of Law, will be awarded each year to recognize student leadership, character, and academic excellence. The recipients will be known as the Judge Aronovitz Scholars.

Winner of Miami Law/Young ICCA Scholarship Announced in Singapore

(Posted: 06-11-12) The winner of the newly created Miami Law/Young International Council for International Arbitration scholarship award is Wamiq Chowdhury, a graduate of New York University School of Law, who will be attending Miami Law in the fall. The award will be announced this week during the 21st Congress in Singapore, the biggest and most influential arbitration congress in the world.

Miami Law Adjuncts Fund Scholarships for Needy Students

(Posted: 06-11-12) Many adjunct professors of the University of Miami School of Law have generously contributed over $80,000 to the Adjunct Faculty Scholarship Fund. Since its inception in the fall of 2011, three $5,000 need-based scholarships have been awarded to outstanding Litigation Skills students, and twenty $2,500 scholarships to deserving third-year students to defer the costs of Florida Bar preparation courses.

Miami Law's Human Rights Clinic and Haitian Women of Miami Urge End to Haiti Deportations

(Posted: 06-06-12) In a report released Wednesday about the humanitarian crisis that has ravaged Haiti since the 2010 earthquake, Michel Forst, the United Nations Independent Expert on Haiti, calls on the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic, France, and other countries to halt deportations to Haiti. The University of Miami School of Law Human Rights Clinic and Fanm Ayisyen Nan Miyami (FANM)/Haitian Women of Miami – groups that have worked on this issue for the past two years – share Forst's concerns and echo his call.
