Four Miami Law alumni – Francisco "Frank" Angones, JD '76; The Honorable A. Jay Cristol, JD '58; Edward A. Moss, JD '61; and Ellen Catsman Freidin, JD '78 – were recently named as "Legal Legends" by the 11th Judicial Circuit Historical Society. The award is given to judges, attorneys and others who have helped preserve South Florida's legal heritage. The society selected eight legends this year.
Although Zhenying Li currently lives in Shangai, China, she is starting to feel more and more at home at the University of Miami School of Law. This may sound unlikely, but through the International Graduate Law Programs's online chats, Zhenying – and other prospective LL.M. students all over the world – are getting the chance to get up close and personal with current and future students, faculty, and administration. Having already been accepted to Miami Law's International Law LL.M. Program, Zhenying is a part of the special, private Admitted Students chat.
Miami Law mourns the passing of Nancy Benitez, who died on April 26 at the age of 88. Mrs. Benitez was the wife of the late Professor Rafael C. Benitez, who founded the Comparative Law LL.M. program, the Inter-American Law LL.M. program, and the Inter-American Law Review at Miami Law.
Miami Law's Legal Corps has been awarded a grant by The Miami Foundation, which will fund a six-month fellowship in the Housing Unit Foreclosure Defense Project at Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc.
Miami Law students from the Professional Responsibility and Ethics Program presented a CLE training for the Bankruptcy Bar Association of Miami-Dade County. Student Fellows Irma Khoja, Matipa Nyamangwanda, and Bianca Zuluaga, as well as Program Director Jan Jacobowitz, Judge Laurel Myerson-Isicoff and Judge Robert Mark of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida participated in the panel.

The internship with Nuñnez, Muñoz – a firm located in Santiago, Chile that specializes in Mining Environmental law – has been a dream come true for the rising second-year student. Besides the beautiful people, weather and delicious food, Marsicano is happy to be getting a jumpstart on Latin American language and laws.

The HOPE Fellow had applied to several international tribunals at the beginning of his third year. None responded. Then, as he registered for classes, studied for exams, and prepared for a final semester in Miami, he received his acceptance letter to the Tribunal on December 10th.
Tamara Toussaint, JD '08, has been appointed to serve as a member with the Commission on Presidential Scholars. The group was first established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to honor graduating high school students. As one of the Commissioners, Toussaint will assist in recognizing up to 141 students who are given the honor of Presidential Scholar each year.
Miami Law has recently launched Yoga for Law Students. The free class is held Monday, Wednesday and Friday inside the Law School Student Lounge. The 90-mintue class, which begins at 7:00 a.m., is led by Lux Guacci, who is also the Clinical Instructor and Supervising Attorney for the Children and Youth Law Clinic.
Miami Law's Professional Responsibility Program (PREP) recently traveled to the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center (FIAC) where Interns Simona Popova and Kelly Rains, under the supervision of PREP Director Jan Jacobowitz, provided an engaging and interactive presentation on compelling legal and ethical issues raised in the immigration context.
Miami Law's new interdisciplinary course – "The Idea of the Hospital: An Interdisciplinary Inquiry" – launched this spring with thirty-six graduate students from various schools across the University of Miami (UM) campus. The first of its kind, the course gave students an exclusive opportunity to study the multiple perspectives from which we view, think, and work in hospitals.
Miami Law alumna Melvia B. Green, JD '78, was named by the appointing authority for the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF) as one of 25 legal experts who will serve as appeals judges, issuing rulings on GCCF appeal decisions. Green is a former judge of the 3rd District Court of Appeal of Florida (DCA). Former Miami Law adjunct faculty member Judge Gerald T. Wetherington was also named as an appeals judge.
It's that time of year again. As other law students are starting summer internships or preparing to study abroad, recent law school graduates are sitting in classrooms nation-wide, reviewing hours and hours of subject areas that will be covered on the bar admissions test.
Five students who are active participants in Miami Law's HOPE Public Interest Resource Center have been selected as Equal Justice Works Summer Corps members this summer. This program provides $1,132 in education vouchers to students working at least 300 summer hours at a nonprofit organization.
The American Bar Association has appointed Miami Law's Assistant Dean of Law Development and Alumni Relations, Georgina Angones, to its Council for Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Educational Pipeline for a one-year term.
The School of Law and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) at the University of Miami offer an exciting and targeted offering for students who want to further their careers in marine affairs and policy. Enabling a student to earn both a Juris Doctor and Masters of Professional Science in Marine Affairs degree (J.D./M.P.S.), the joint degree program in law and marine affairs and policy prepares students to be leaders in law and marine affairs and be better positioned to tackle the environmental issues society is facing from a policy and legal angle.
Miami Law continues its tradition of providing a training ground for future attorneys by offering students the opportunity to participate in a variety of on-campus clinics over the summer. The Children and Youth Law Clinic, Health and Elder Law Clinic, Immigration Clinic, and Human Rights Clinic all give service-oriented Miami Law students a chance to practice hands-on lawyering with real clients.

Miami Law Associate Professor of Clinical Legal Education and Director of the Children & Youth Law Clinic Bernard Perlmutter will receive the Daily Business Review's Sookie Williams Outstanding Service to the Legal Community Award at the Dade County Bar Association's 95th anniversary reception and dinner this Friday, June 3. The award recognizes exemplary service to the legal community of Miami-Dade County.
Jessica Carvalho Morris, Director of the International Graduate Law Programs at Miami Law, was re-elected to the Amnesty International USA Board of Directors for a second three-year term.
Attorney Elizabeth Honkonen, J.D. '98, has been named President of the Law Alumni Association (LAA) for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. She previously served as President-elect, Vice President for Regional Programs, Vice President for Alumni Relations and Activities, and Vice President of Fundraising.
