August 26, 2010 – It is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news of the passing of Bruce J. Winick, professor of law, the first Laurie Silvers and Mitchell Rubenstein Distinguished Professor of Law, and dear friend to his many colleagues at the University of Miami.

Bruce was extraordinary for the passion of his convictions and the brilliance of his mind. During more than 36 years at the University, his teaching, scholarship, and advocacy helped to transform the landscape of mental health law, bringing a new level of compassion and dignity to the treatment of people within the legal system.

If there is one measure of comfort in the midst of our loss, it is that Bruce was able to see his life's work come to fruition last September when the School of Law dedicated the nation's first Therapeutic Jurisprudence Center. The center will remain a vital tribute to Bruce's legacy.

Bruce will be deeply missed, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his daughter, our colleague Margot Winick, his family, and his many, many friends. The School of Law will hold a celebration of his life for the University community. We will provide more details when they are available.
