Neal Russell Sonnett is the embodiment of the values that the University
of Miami School of Law strives to instill in its students. A consummate
professional with a reputation as one of the foremost criminal defense
attorneys in the nation, Neal received both his undergraduate and legal
education at the University of Miami. In addition to his significant
professional accomplishments, Neal has had a long and distinguished
history of service to the bar and community. He has held leadership
positions in local, state and national bar associations and currently is
President of the American Judicature Society and a leader in the ABA
House of Delegates representing the Criminal Justice Section. He recently
received the Outstanding Service Award from the Fellows of the
American Bar Foundation. Neal’s contributions to the community
include providing voluntary legal services and participating in many
civic and charitable organizations. Through his work as an adjunct
professor at the School of Law, Neal has passed on to future generations
of attorneys not only his substantive knowledge but also his passion and
love for the law. It is my privilege as Committee Chair to honor and
recognize Neal R. Sonnett, Class of 1967, as the recipient of the 2007
Alumnus of Distinction Award.
