
State Representative Marco Rubio Speaks at Dean’s Circle Luncheon
The Honorable Marco Rubio (JD ’96), Florida House of Representatives, was the guest speaker at the Dean’s Circle Luncheon on September 22 at the Banker’s Club of Miami. President Donna Shalala introduced Representative Rubio, who will become the first Hispanic in Florida’s history to preside over a legislative body when he begins his term as Speaker of the House in November 2006. Representative Rubio spoke about what he considers are this country’s three most important institutions: family, civil society and the free market system. After his speech, Law Alumni Association President Barbara Perez (JD ‘93) presented Representative Rubio with the “University of Miami Law Alumni Association Achievement Award,” which recognizes alumni who have excelled in their profession, in the public or private sector, or in service to the legal community. Richard Milstein (JD ’74), Master of Ceremonies and Co-Chair of the Dean’s Circle; Brian Spector (JD ’78), Co-Chair of the Dean’s Circle; Adrienne Arsht, Chairman of the Board of TotalBank; Hilarie Bass (JD ’81), UM Trustee and Chair of the School of Law’s Momentum Campaign; Associate Dean Donna Coker; Associate Dean and Dean of Students Jeannette Hausler; and Professors of Law Minnette Massey and Rick Williamson were among the many distinguished guests in attendance at the luncheon.
