The eruption of misunderstanding and hatred between blacks and Lubavitchers (members of an Orthodox Jewish sect) is the focus of Fires in the Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn and other Identities, a play to be presented at UM Law February 27-28.
Featuring 19 actors from the Law School community (students, faculty, and administrators), the work consists of 29 monologues the playwright, Anna Deveare Smith, put together from interviews with participants and commentators following the Crown Heights riots in 1991. It underlines the pain, oppression and discrimination both group have historically experienced outside their own communities.
The play, directed by Prof. Marc Fajer, will be presented at 8 p.m., Saturday, February 27, and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Sunday, February 28, in Law School Room 209. Each performance will be followed by a reception and discussion, facilitated by UM Law professors, in the Student Lounge.
Performances are open to the public. Tickets are $3 in advance and $5 at the door. Please call (305) 284-3914 for further information.
The play is sponsored by the Association of Caribbean Law Students, the Black Law Students Association, and the Cardozo Law Society at the University of Miami School of Law.
