International law scholar and UM Law Professor Markus Wagner spoke at two conferences in New Zealand in late October.

On October 23, Professor Wagner spoke at a New Zealand Centre for International Economic Law conference in Wellington, New Zealand, where scholars and practitioners came together to discuss the challenges that international trade law and institutions face in the future.  Professor Wagner presented a paper titled “Taking Interdependence Seriously: The Need for a Reassessment of the Precautionary Principle in International Trade Law,” which addresses questions of climate change and endocrine disrupting chemicals and how this relates to questions of world trade law.

On October 29, Professor Wagner participated in a discussion on whether private action can trigger the responsibility of World Trade Organization (WTO) members before the judicial organs of the WTO. The talk was held at the University of Auckland Law School. Professor Wagner presented a paper titled “WTO Members and ‘Private Regulation’: Assessing the Need for Attribution of Conduct in the Framework of the WTO.”
