EAPR students Jason Goldstein, Jennifer Malaer, and Ben Carter study the hypothetical with the Legal Services attorneys.

On October 16, three students from the Ethics & Professional Responsibility Program (EAPR) at UM Law conducted a CLE ethics training at Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc (LSGMI).

2Ls Ben Carter and Jason M. Goldstein and 3L Jenn Malaer led an interactive session at LSGMI on ethical issues encountered in various areas of the law, from public housing evictions and foreclosure proceedings to unemployment compensation benefits claims. The training focused on current, former, and prospective client conflict situations within the various practice areas at LSGMI. It also discussed lawyer-client relationship formation and the duties of supervising lawyer’s over non-lawyer assistants.

Echoing the sentiments of a Legal Services attorney who attended the session, 2L Ben Carter said the trainings “demonstrate the importance of both sides of legal ethics: the academic and the practical. The interaction between the ethics rules we learn at school and real life practice adds a lot to the learning experience.”

The EAPR program, which was established at UM in 1996, is designed to provide law firms and legal organizations with an analysis of ethical dilemmas that occur within a particular organization’s day-to-day practice. The students in the program tailor hypothetical situations based upon suggestions from Legal Services attorneys, allowing for a more in-depth and personal CLE training then is usually afforded.
