Alumna Edith G. Osman elected president of Florida Supreme Court Historical Society
First Woman to Serve as President in Almost Three Decades
UM School of Law alumna Edith G. Osman, a shareholder in the Miami office of Carlton Fields, was recently elected president of the Florida Supreme Court Historical Society for 2009-2010, making her the first woman to hold the position since Nancy Dobson served as the society’s first president nearly three decades ago. Osman was chosen during an election at the FSCHS’ Annual Trustees Meeting held in Orlando in conjunction with the Florida Bar Convention.
The FSCHS’ primary function is to preserve and memorialize materials relevant to the Florida Supreme Court’s rich and lengthy history. It has 600 members, mostly lawyers and judges, located throughout Florida and elsewhere. Osman, replacing current President Alan Greer, previously served as first vice president. She currently chairs the society’s Oral History Committee and serves as an Officer on the Executive Committee.
“It is an honor to serve the society,” she said in a Carlton Fields press release. “I look forward to continuing its important mission and the fine programs it has established. This year we will begin work on the third volume of the Supreme Court’s History and are undertaking a project to memorialize the African-American experience on the Court.”
As president, Osman will direct the organization’s programs and activities that educate the public about the important role of the courts in America’s system of government and preserve the history of the Florida judiciary.
The 1983 Law School alumna is the past president of The Florida Bar, state-wide president and Miami-Dade chapter president of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers, past president of the Council of Voluntary Bar Presidents and past chair of The Florida Bar’s Standing Committee on the Legal Needs of Children.
Osman is also the 2009 recipient of the Anti Defamation League’s Jurisprudence Award. She is currently a member of the ABA House of Delegates and a member of the Board of Directors of the Anti-Defamation League, the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and The Commonwealth Institute. She is also a Supreme Court Certified Civil and Family Law Mediator. At Carlton Fields, she chairs the firm’s Family Law Practice Group, practicing in the areas of matrimonial law, commercial litigation, and mediation.
