UM Law alumnus Patrick S. Montoya, a partner at Coral Gables-based law firm Colson Hicks Eidson, has been named president of Miami's Spellman-Hoeveler Chapter of the legal mentoring society American Inn of Court.
American Inns of Court (AIC) are modeled after the English Inns of Court and a tradition of shared wisdom, experience, and mentoring among seasoned judges and lawyers and newer, aspiring practitioners. There are over 400 American inns with over 100,000 active and alumni members. The inns are designed to improve the skills, professionalism and ethics of the bench and bar. Members include judges, lawyers, and in some cases, law professors and law students.
Montoya earned his Bachelor’s degree from Davidson College in Davidson, NC, where he majored in political science with a concentration in ethnic studies. After graduating, he was awarded a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship and spent a year teaching and studying dance and martial arts in Brazil and Spain. He went on to receive a cum laude law degree from the University of Miami School of Law, where he was a member of the Inter-American Law Review and the Moot Court Board.
At Colson Hicks Eidson, Montoya’s practice focuses on class action, commercial litigation, products liability, and general personal injury litigation. Montoya also serves on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida's Ad Hoc Committee on Rules and Procedures, and is a former adjunct professor in the University of Miami School of Law’s Legal Research and Writing Program. His professional affiliations include memberships in the Dade County Bar Association Young Lawyer's Section; the American Association for Justice; and the Caribbean Bar Association. Montoya is also a member of the executive committee for the National Conference of Community and Justice (NCCJ), Greater Miami Region. He hosts the television program, “NCCJ: Your Community and You,” and was awarded the Donor Next Door Award from the Dade Community Foundation for his volunteerism with the NCCJ.
