UM Law alumna Yeshimebet Abebe, JD ’02, has been appointed as special assistant of rural utilities for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.


Abebe, an Iowa native, recently worked with Rep. Bruce Braley of Iowa. She has practiced law in both the private and non-profit sector, and worked on the Obama Campaign in Indiana during the general election. She holds a B.S. degree in urban regional studies from Cornell University, a M.A. degree in international law and the settlement of disputes from the United Nations Mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica, a certificate in international humanitarian law from the International Committee of the Red Cross, and a Juris Doctor law degree from the University of Miami School of Law, where she served as articles and comments editor of the University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review.


Abebe was among seven to be named to USDA staff positions by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on July 24, 2009.
