Tod Aronovitz, a nationally recognized trial lawyer and UM Law alumnus, Class of 1974, has been elected without opposition to preside over The Florida Bar in 2001-2002. He will be sworn in as president-elect in June 2001, and in June 2002 he will become Florida Bar president.
Aronovitz will be the sixth UM Law graduate to head the 66,000 member association and the second to serve as president within the last three years. Edith Osman, JD '84, served as the second women president from 1999-2000. Other UM alumni who have served as president are Burton Young, JD '50 (1970-71), Edward J. Atkins, JD '51 (1976-77), H. Russell Troutman, JD '58, (1977-78) and Samuel S. Smith, JD '60 (1981-82).
Aronovitz, who heads a four-lawyer firm, Aronovitz and Associates, specializing in catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases, has been active in leadership positions within The Florida Bar since 1996, when he was elected to the Board of Governors. He found he greatly enjoyed the opportunity to work on issues that were important to lawyers.
For the moment, Aronovitz said, he has only one "limited" goal for his tenure: "That's to improve the practice of law for every Florida lawyer and to improve the image of attorneys. I love a challenge. It's time for the lawyers of the state of Florida to say enough is enough. We're proud of our profession and we're going to tell everyone."
Aronovitz is the past president of the University of Miami School of Law Alumni Association and has served as an adjunct professor of law at UM Law, lecturing on civil litigation and trial techniques. He is founder and past president of the Mitzvah Lodge B'nai B'rith, Kendall, Fla., and serves on the boards of directors of Temple Beth Am, Miami, and the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged. He is a member of the Alliance for Ethical Government and the Dade County Put Something Back Program and is a charter member of the Coalition for Family Safety. In addition, he is a volunteer for the American Board of Trial Advocates Guardian Ad Litem Program.
Dean Dennis Lynch will honor president-elect Aronovitz at a special School of Law alumni reception on Thurs., June 21, 2001, at the Orlando World Center Marriott in conjunction with the Florida Bar Annual Meeting.
