"On Oct. 28th, 2008, the International Law Society hosted a lecture by Ambassador Alvaro de Soto. Ambassador de Soto, a Peruvian diplomat, left the United Nations in May 2007 after a 25-year career working with Secretaries-General Perez de Cuellar, Boutros-Ghali and Annan. He was closely involved in a variety of issues before the UN as a senior member of the Secretary-General’s office and the Department of Political Affairs. As the Secretary-General’s Personal Representative for the Central American peace process, he led the 1990-1991 negotiations which ended the decade-long war in El Salvador. He conducted the 1999-2004 negotiations which led to the draft comprehensive settlement for the Cyprus problem submitted to separate simultaneous referendums consulting the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in April 2004. He was the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Myanmar (1995-1999) and his Special Representative for the Western Sahara (2003-2005). His last assignment, for two years, was as the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. Ambassador de Soto spoke about his extensive experience working in the field of public international law, and gave his incite into the major international legal issues facing the world today. He also shared his advice to the law students that were in attendance about how to pursue a career in the field of public international law.”
