LITIGATION SKILLS AND EXTERNSHIPS
| The flagship of Miami’s skills training is our nationally acclaimed Litigation Skills Program. While many other schools teach trial advocacy, usually as an intensive course taught over a shorter period of time, few teach pretrial skills, and no other school presents it all as one package, for as many hours as we do, or opens it to all students who wish to participate. Approximately 80 percent of our students take the voluntary six-credit Litigation Skills I class, which helps them develop fundamental skills through intensive classroom exercise and simulated courtroom trial experience. Litigation Skills II provides instruction in advanced litigation matters such as jury selection, expert witnesses and multiparty or multi-claim lawsuits. Students can also develop excellent skills through one-semester clinical placements with approximately 50 agencies located in South Florida or through summer placements with agencies in their home states. Among potential placements are the American Civil Liberties Union; Attorney General Civil Litigation, Criminal Appellate, and Economic Crimes sections; Comptroller’s Office, State of Florida; U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; Florida Department of Transportation; Florida Justice Institute, Inc.; H.E.L.P. (HIV Education and Law Project); State Attorney’s Office; Public Defender’s Office; U.S. Coast Guard; U.S. Customs Service; and Securities and Exchange Commission. |
