The South Florida Water Management District will hold a public meeting on January 14, 2003, to present the draft Evaluation of Alternatives Report for the Lake Okeechobee Sediment Management Feasibility Study. The focus of the meeting is the evaluation of alternatives designed to address internal loading of phosphorus from the sediments within Lake Okeechobee. The public meeting will be held at the following time and location:

    January 14, 2003
 SFWMD Okeechobee Service Center
205 North Parrott Avenue, Suite 201
Okeechobee, FL

At the meeting, project staff will summarize the status of the study and solicit input on the draft Evaluation of Alternatives report recently issued for public and interagency review. The draft Evaluation of Alternatives presents findings from the detailed evaluation of three sediment management alternatives. (NOTE: 36 alternatives were initially analyzed and screened using specific criteria including effectiveness, implementation, applicability to Lake Okeechobee, risk and liability.) The three technologies are:

   - No In-Lake Action combined with monitoring of external loads
   - In-Place Chemical Treatment using aluminum compounds
   - Hydraulic Dredging using three post-dredge sediment management scenarios, including beneficial reuse

Public and interagency comments are vital to the success of the project. All interested parties are invited to attend and participate in this phase of the study. For further information, please contact Jorge Patino, the District's Project Manager, at (561) 682-2731.
