What Is EcoWatch?
NBC 6's Commitment To The Environment
NBC 6 has made a yearlong commitment to coverage of vital
environmental
stories that affect our lives here in South Florida -- it's
called EcoWatch.
Bird kills from pesticides or pollution happen too often in
Florida. They
don't have to, because our state is one of the most important
habitats for
shorebirds in the entire country. Our precious coral is dying
faster than
ever before. It doesn't have to, because science knows how to
protect our
coral, and the incredibly valuable ecosystem it creates.
Development continues to push South Florida resources to their
limits. It
doesn't have to because South Florida cities know how to work
together to
allow responsible growth, and protect our quality of life.
There are just a few of the hundreds of concerns directly
affecting the
beautiful place we call home. So, over the next year, starting
with Earth
Day 2001, NBC 6 is committing an extra effort to investigate,
report, and
share with you these important stories.
It's an unprecedented project for a television station.
With our partners at the Miami Herald and Ocean Drive
Magazine, we plan to
go beyond just reporting these stories. We want to engage the
people of
South Florida in a robust debate over how to protect our future.
You'll see EcoWatch reports each week in our newscasts and
your children
will see it in their classrooms with special ecology lesson
plans.
Eco-projects, organized by classes, families, or companies, will
actually
improve our environment.
A nature photo contest will show the world our natural beauty.
Famed
Everglades photographer Clyde Butcher and wife Niki will be the
judges.
We'll have a weekly "Eco-tip" to help all of us be
better citizens of the
planet.
NBC 6 will hold town hall meetings and produce television
specials during
the year.
An EcoWatch website will help provide you with all the details
24 hours a
day.
Everyone in the NBC 6 family will be working on EcoWatch...
working on
stories that affect you and working toward protecting South
Florida's
future.
