The Living Everglades
Welcome to EMPACT This Living Everglades
web site has been made possible by an Environmental Protection Agency
EMPACT Metro Grant awarded to the South Florida Water Management District.
This web site provides citizens, scientists, teachers, and students with
access to the vast amount of Everglades data housed at the South Florida
Water Management District. This means that you can find data on water
quality, hydrology and weather for parameters such as nitrogen and
phosphorus levels, water levels and flows, and rainfall throughout the
Greater Everglades region. These data are provided by South Florida Water
Management District and other agencies such as: U.S. Geological Survey,
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Everglades National Park, and the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

DCSE Announces Release of Mapping Components
of The Everglades EMPACT Web Site in Collaboration With South Florida
Water Management District Solution Utilizes the Latest Offerings From
ORACLE and MapInfo MISSION VIEJO, Calif., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- DCSE
Inc, a California developer of environ mental and collaborative web-based
project solutions, announces the completion of the map-based user
interface (UI) for a web site developed for South Florida Water Management
District (SFWMD). The site was designed to allow a varied cross section of
the community, i.e. scientists, school age children, and inquiring minds
to view the regulatory, scientific, and environmental data and the biotic
integrity of the remaining Everglades. ``We have utilized the latest
technology's available from both ORACLE and MapInfo to enable access to
spatial, time series, and multimedia data over the web using the server
side Java technology,'' said Ali Diba, President and CEO of DCSE. SFWMD
selected Oracle Spatial as the repository for spatial data. DCSE used
MapXtreme for Java to develop the spatial component of the web application
due to close synergy between MapXtreme for Java and Oracle Spatial. ``We
were able to mesh the two technologies together in ways that had not been
attempted before, with excellent results,'' said Diba. Brian Turcotte,
Principal Investigator for the SFWMD, EMPACT Project said, ``The
technology stack chosen for this application, Oracle Time Series, Oracle
interMedia, Oracle Spatial, Oracle 9iAS application server, and MapXtreme
for Java allowed us to deploy, and even re-host, this site to different
hardware platforms and operating systems with a minimum of effort.'' ``The
UI incorporated the concept of a Spatial Query Window for the District's
time series data collection and documents making it easy for the site
visitors to find what they're looking for,'' said Marie Pietrucha,
co-Principal Investigator for the EMPACT Project at SFWMD. The EMPACT web
site is an ongoing project. About Everglades EMPACT web site Everglades
EMPACT web site is scheduled to be online from South Florida in the near
future. About DCSE: DCSE is a software product development and consulting
services company specializing in the development of environmental and
collaboration solution, for the utility industry.

a report prepared by the
National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences
June 29, 2001
The objective of the Clean Water Act is "to restore and
maintain the chemical, physical, and the Biological integrity of the
nation's waters". Accordingly, Congress articulated the more
measurable goal of attaining water quality to provide for recreation and
to protect fish, shellfish, and wildlife.

American Geophysical Union -- AGU
For over three quarters of a century, AGU
has supplied an organizational framework within which geophysicists have
created the programs and products needed to advance their science. From
its beginnings as the representative of American geophysicists in the
international scientific community, AGU has evolved beyond parochial
boundaries of nation and discipline into an active community of over
38,000 scientists from 117 countries. AGU now stands as a leader in the
increasingly interdisciplinary global endeavor that encompasses the
geophysical sciences.

Geophysical Studies of the Southwest Florida Coast:
Mapping of Saltwater Intrusion
This task entails the use of ground and
airborne geophysical methods to obtain subsurface information needed to
construct hydrologic models. This information includes the location of
geologic and hydrologic boundaries, such as geologic contacts which form
permeability boundaries and saltwater intrusion corresponding to changes in
water quality. Such boundaries are often map able using electromagnetic
geophysical techniques. Data will be collected in areas where information is
not available from wells

Top 10 Birding Spots
The Everglades, Florida
Its fame as North America's window
to the tropics is almost a cliché. The names Anhinga Trail, Mrazek
Pond and Snake Bight Trail — "must-see" locations on
the Everglades birding loop — are etched in every birder's mind.
Though shaken by drought and diminished by competing land-use
problems, the Everglades remains an engrossing, enriching
environment — and one that holds special treasures for visiting
birders.

The Nature Conservancy: Top 10 birding Spots
Almost half the world's bird species depend on the forests, wetlands
and grasslands of the Americas - from Canada to Argentina. But the birds
of the Americas are under threat. More than 1,000 species are now in
decline or dangerously scarce
